FC Barcelona have racked up quite the reputation for mismanaged funds and poor decisions in the transfer market. As of late, the club have been extremely short of cash, and been forced to resort to loan deals and signing players for free upon contract expiry. A recent list made by 90min France on X came to the surprise of fans as it revealed some of the highest paid players in La Liga.
Real Madrid recently signed Kylian Mbappe for free from Paris Saint-Germain after several years of negotiations. While it wouldn’t have been wrong to think that the Frenchman is the highest paid player in Spain, the actuality is otherwise. As per 90min, two Barcelona players outrank Madrid’s latest signing in terms of annual salary.
Frenkie de Jong leads the list with an annual salary of €37.5 million while Robert Lewandowski is close behind at €33.5. Surprisingly, Mbappe is set to earn €31.2 million per year, even though the 25-year-old was handed a €100 million signing bonus by Los Blancos!
Fans were at a loss for words to learn that De Jong and Lewandowski outranked Mbappe in terms of salary.

Frenkie de Jong is one of the most important players in FC Barcelona‘s midfield. The Dutchman however, has been ‘inconsistent’ with his form, and has often failed to live up to his expectations. A fan commented that it is decisions like these (paying De Jong €37.5 million) that prevents the club from repairing the financial damage done by the previous management.
Another claimed that only Florentino Perez could convince Mbappe to accept a salary of such proportions. Others quickly jumped in to state that Joan Laporta and Deco were no different from the ‘disastrous’ rule of Josep Maria Bartomeu. A few Barca supporters laughed at the same, claiming that it is decisions like these that push Barca closer to being broke every day.
Some Catalan fans hit back, claiming that Perez was forced to pay a gigantic amount to Mbappe as signing bonus. Others laughed at how the highest earner in the League still couldn’t find a way to pass the ball forward. They made fun of his style of play and shared clips of him appearing to be clueless on the pitch. Fans hoped that Hansi Flick‘s arrival would somehow rejuvenate both De Jong and Lewandowski.
