Jayson Tatum and Grant Williams
The Boston Celtics have had a flying start to their 2024-25 NBA campaign, winning five out of the six games they have played. Their most recent win came against the Charlotte Hornets. However, Celtics star Jayson Tatum and Hornets veteran Grant Williams stole the headlines during this matchup. It’s important to note that Williams is a former Celtics player.
Toward the end of Boston’s 124-109 victory over Charlotte on Friday, Williams took out Tatum with a hit more suited for an NFL game than an NBA contest. Tatum carried the ball up to court after grabbing a rebound with 2:02 left in the contest. At halfcourt, Williams charged at him and checked his shoulder, laying him out.
Williams was removed from the game after receiving a Flagrant two foul call. Many Celtics stars were left upset with Williams’ tackle on his Tatum. James Williams, the referee of the game, explained that the violation was flagrant 2.

Maybe wanting the game to be over, Tatum left without addressing Williams. However, Williams was yelled at as he exited the court by Tatum’s current teammates, particularly Jaylen Brown, who seemed to feel differently. Brown also addressed this situation after the game.

In relevance to this, Tatum was fouled by his former teammate Grant Williams during the most recent game. Brown was having none of it as he called out Williams in the post-match press conference for his dirty play.

However, soon after, Williams also shared his feelings regarding the foul made on Tatum. He stated that he did not intend to hurt Tatum. He also stated that Tatum is ‘one of the closest friends’ in the league. All eyes will be on their next matchup as the 2024-25 NBA season progresses. The Celtics will be looking to defend their title this season after clinching it this past season.
