Nothing seems to be going right for Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors at the moment. Another disappointing, 104-100, loss at home to the Houston Rockets in the NBA Cup, who were playing without star player, Kevin Durant.

20 games into the 2025-26 campaign, the Warriors are a .500 team and are currently placed at 8th in the Western Conference standings. The way the roster is constructed at present, the Warriors are levels behind the top teams such as defending champions Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers in the west.

This was a game the Warriors should have won. The team were 6-1 at home and earned a 12-point lead at halftime. Without their primary scorer, the Rockets ended up outscoring their opponents by 16 points in the second half.

Green, who is often regarded as the defensive leader of the team has called out the Warriors a couple of weeks and was absolutely livid once again with the team’s performance after the match:

Our defense is s—, because it’s not necessarily the numbers. Like how do you feel when you’re out there? And if it’s just letdown after letdown, it’s bigger than the numbers, you know what I’m saying? Defense is about demeanor. So if there’s letdown after letdown and it kills your demeanor, it kills your bravado, then you’re just a soft team. So it’s bigger than a number. What does the other team feel when you’re defending them? And right now they don’t feel no force.

Golden State Warriors are all over the place

When Jimmy Butler moved to the Warriors less than a year ago, he seemed to have found his joy back. The move was supposed to put the Warriors in contention as he joined forces with Stephen Curry. And the signs at first were promising.

After knocking out the second seeds, the Houston Rockets in seven games, it looked like the Warriors were ready to mount a challenge for the championship. But an injury to Curry in game one against the Minnesota Timberwolves ended their ambitions.

Hence, there was a lot of optimism surrounding the Warriors this campaign but things have looked far from promising in recent weeks. Butler echoed Green’s words and appeared dissatisfied with the team’s performance:

We don’t box out. We don’t go with the scouting report. We let anybody do whatever they want. Open shots, get into the paint, free throws. It’s just sad. I don’t care what Steve [Kerr] says. It’s not on him, and it’s not on the coaches.

Stephen Curry’s injury status

There is no doubt that the Warriors go as far as Curry takes them. The four-time NBA champion has shown no signs of ageing as he is averaging 27.9 points per game in his 17th season in the NBA.

Curry has struggled offensively against the Rockets since last season and Wednesday night was no different as the guard scored only 14 points in 33 minutes before walking off the court due to injury with 35 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The 37-year-old exited with a right quad contusion when Amen Thompson rammed into him on a drive. It is an injury not typically associated with significant missed time. But as the prospect of playing without Curry looms, a lot of the responsibilities will fall on the shoulders of Butler and Green as the senior members of the squad.
