As it often happens, the players who have talked about retirement, the same old question of whether the last matches they played would be the last ones of their careers, is always asked. And sometimes, it irritates them.

Even Rafael Nadal was frustrated when he, after his straight sets defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Paris Olympics, was asked whether he played his last singles match of his tennis career. He did not hold himself back as he made sure he express himself that he doesn’t want to get bothered by the retirement question.

I can't think about that all day. I come here and you ask me the same thing every day, and at the same time, in the end it is very difficult to recover an optimal level if I think about whether I retire or not.
Rafael Nadal told Spanish media Carrusel Deportivo

Nadal then talked about the difficulties he faced last year. The injuries and surgeries that hampered his progress, plus the difficulty of finding his lost form, have not allowed him to play to his full potential. And which why, when he thinks about a plan to move forward, the questions about retirement affect his ability to make a decision.

Rafael Nadal still has the chance to win his 3rd Olympic gold

With Rafael Nadal’s declining form, the tennis fraternity, though eagerly waited to watch the clash of the longtime rivals, had predicted about Novak Djokovic’s victory. Even though the Spaniard is the King of Clay with 14 French Open titles, he was defeated twice at the Roland Garros in the same season- first, at the French Open first-round by Alexander Zverev and then by Djokovic in the Olympics.

Djokovic also registered his third win over Nadal at Roland Garros and it was also Nadal’s fifth defeat on the Parisian clay. But even after the defeat, Nadal, who took home two golds already, has a chance to win his third medal. The 22-time Grand Slam champion won gold in singles in 2008 Beijing Olympics and the gold in doubles in 2016 Rio Games.

He has teamed up with 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz for doubles in this edition of the Games and the pair has already registered their first victory. They will next face Dutch players Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof. Alcaraz is also the favorite to win the singles as Djokovic is also dealing with form issues, not to forget, Alcaraz’s first French Open win this season.
