There have rarely been instances where Deion Sanders has had a conflict with the media. Unfortunately, the recent press conference was not one of those as he lashed out at a reporter, criticizing the media for a change of attitude because of the NIL era.
During a heated press conference on Tuesday, Coach Prime alleged that ever since the college football players have had the opportunity to earn money and build a name through Name, Image, and Likeness deals for themselves before the NFL, the media has become envious of them.
The change of attitude that he was referring to was the intense scrutiny college football players, especially his son, Shedeur Sanders faced; when a few years back, the media considered them amateurs in the field of football. He argued that just because the young players have found a way to earn a name for themselves doesn’t mean they should be examined with the same standards as the NFL players.
Once upon a time, you guys never attacked college players. Now they’re making more money than y’all, and some of y’all are envious and jealous about that. So you’re on the attack. It was hands off a college player, because he was an amateur, remember that? Remember that, guys? Now it’s hands-on, go at ’em, any kind of way you want. They’re making more money than me and I’m mad about it.Deion Sanders said
Although he acknowledged that these things are part of the media’s job, he believes they shouldn’t be too hostile about it. Given, that these young players are already facing tons of challenges as they haven’t even entered the league, facing such criticism and scrutiny may discourage them.
How did Deion Sanders’ interaction with media escalate?
During his argument about the media’s alleged attack on the players, the Colorado Buffaloes head coach asserted that the criticism should be limited to the on-field performance and the college players’ personal life shouldn’t be dragged into it. It mainly started when the media asked about his relationship with Travis Hunter.

He first answered the question by sharing that he has a close relationship with all his players and with Hunter, they talk about “everything.” He believes in nurturing these young players with life lessons that would not only help them on the field but also in their personal lives.
Before the media could move on to the next question, Sanders diverted the question in an entirely different direction to discuss the changing landscape in football, especially at the college level. However, things escalated quickly and he began alleging the media of attacking the college players.
