Naomi Osaka gave it back to a tennis fan who called her a ‘fluke’. Osaka recently gave a walkover to Coco Gauff in the fourth round of the China Open after succumbing to a lower back injury.

Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam champion, winning the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021 and the US Open in 2018 and 2020. She has taken multiple breaks from tennis due to mental health issues and after pregnancy in 2023. In July of that year, she gave birth to her first daughter, Shai, with her partner, rapper Cordae.

Osaka made her comeback at the 2024 Brisbane International and although she is a shadow of her former self, she has been part of memorable encounters, including her second-round French Open match against Iga Swiatek where the Pole, who became the champion later, was on the verge of losing. Although she is struggling a lot this year, being called a ‘fluke’ made her furious as she ranted against why it’s not the right word to describe her.

I just saw someone call me a fluke. How is it possible to be a fluke with 4 grand slams, lighting the Olympic torch, beating multiple top 20 opponents and being close to top 50 the year after giving birth? Foh, you couldn’t even touch one of my accomplishments with your fingernail.

It’s been our first tournament together with @naomiosaka and it was so rich in terms or learning. From the practice sessions to the warm ups on match days, to all the preparations and the match briefing and debriefings, I got so much to learn about her.

Before the 54-year-old Frenchman, Osaka used to work with Belgian coach Wim Fissette and parted ways in September 2024. He also used to coach the Japanese star from 2019 to 2022.

Osaka is yet to reach a final or a semifinal this season. She has a 19-16 win-loss record and will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
