Gabrine Muguruza reveals “it will be special” to play mixed-doubles with Rafael Nadal at the Olympics
The two-time Grand Slam champion, Gabrine Muguruza, made a much-awaited comeback in 2020. She lost only against Sofia Kenin to finish as the runner-up at the Australian Open.
As for 2021, the Spaniard is en route to appear at the first edition of the Abu Dhabi WTA Women’s Tennis Open. This event starts from 5 January and will feature the likes of Kenin and Elina Svitolina.
Even so, before kick-starting a new season, the current World No.15 has shed light on the goals which retain the top spot in her mind.
The goals Muguruza aims to achieve
During an interview with Sports Finding, Gabrine noted that she wants to claim all four Major titles, win an Olympic medal and contend in the mixed-doubles with Rafa.
Muguruza said, “Special? Winning all four Grand Slams, an Olympic medal and playing Nadal mixed doubles at the Games. The most special thing is sharing the successes.”
The 27-year-old was originally slated to team up with Nadal at the Rio Olympics in 2016. However, as the latter advanced further in singles and doubles, he opted out of mixed-doubles. There is a high chance that the duo will aim to bag a medal for their homeland at the Tokyo Olympics 2021.
Moreover, she already has a Wimbledon and Roland Garros title on her mantle. The champ claimed these in 2017 and 2016 respectively. Nevertheless, the World No.15 wants to achieve the ‘Golden Slam,’ by winning at the U.S Open and the Australian Open.
Furthermore, Muguruza is currently amidst her pre-season training in Marabella. She will proceed to compete at the WTA Abu Dhabi Open before trying her hand for a third Major in Melbourne Park.
