French tennis superstar Gael Monfils has backed former Wimbledon champions Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to perform well at the All-England Club in the upcoming iteration of the tournament. The former World No.1s made last-minute decisions to be included in the Men’s Singles draw ahead of Wimbledon.
The two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist, Monfils, has supported the duo to go deep at Wimbledon this year. The two 37-year-olds will be in action on Tuesday as they start their campaigns in SW19.
They are aliens. Coming back so quickly is exceptional. And I understand their desire to play, for different reasons for each. These guys are legends. They go further than people can understand. In the end, you just have to try to stop and understand.Gael Monfils said in the pre-tournament press conference (H/T: We Love Tennis)
Djokovic and Murray have a combined nine Wimbledon titles. However, it is the Scottish legend who has had the upper hand over the Serb in their two meetings on the Wimbledon grass. The first occurred at the London Olympics 2012, and the second was in the Wimbledon 2013 final.
Meanwhile, Monfils hasn’t had tremendous memories of playing at Wimbledon before. He hasn’t progressed beyond the 4th round in SW19 and will open his campaign against Adrian Mannarino on Court 18 on Monday.
Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray confirmed for Men’s Singles at Wimbledon
Former World No. 1s Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have been confirmed to play in the Men’s Singles at Wimbledon. The two veterans made a last-minute decision to be involved in the men’s singles draw, which took place on Friday.
Both players are on the same side of the draw and will be in action on Tuesday. Djokovic opens his campaign against Vit Kopriva. Meanwhile, Murray will begin his Wimbledon farewell tournament against Tomas Machac.
Djokovic has been struggling with a meniscus injury he sustained during his Roland Garros campaign earlier this month. The Serbian withdrew from his Roland Garros quarter-final as a consequence and has been working harder than ever to return to full competitive form before Wimbledon.
On the other hand, Murray developed a spinal injury during his Round of 16 match against Jordan Thompson in the Queen’s Club Championships. He withdrew when down 4-1 in the first set. Initial reports confirmed his withdrawal from the tournament, but they were retracted after a dramatic U-turn from Murray’s team.
