Gael Monfils has been navigating a rough patch in his career for the past four months on tour. Things got worse for the Frenchman after he lost to World No.143 Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera in the first round of the Canadian Open. He revealed after the loss, that it was his last match of his career at the ATP 1000 event.

Monfils was hoping to bounce from his disappointing grass-court season at the North American hard-court swing. The 38-year-old has won only just one match on grass, which came at the Wimbledon Championship, where he defeated Ugo Humbert in the first round. Despite being known for his hard-court specialty, he fell to Wu Yibing in straight sets at the Citi Open.

The shocking loss led to a series of insults on social media due to his disappointing display. However, he was hoping to bounce back immediately at Toronto when he faced Chilean qualifier Vera on Sunday (July 27). But Monfils yet again fell to an agonizing 4-6, 6-4, 6(3)-7 defeat against the World No.143 at the tournament.

Before leaving the court, he turned to the crowd, waving to them, and then touched the baseline of the court. The gesture hinted at a possible farewell to the event from the former World No.6. When asked about it during his press conference at Toronto, he revealed that it was his last appearance at the tournament:

It was the last time I play in Toronto, for sure, yeah. There’s no explanation, you know, it’s the last one. It will be two years to play in Toronto, so pretty much I won’t be able to play it. Obviously I think the next one is too old for me, so I think it was the last time I play here. So, you know, I actually thought at the end, and I was like, Well, I think it’s, unfortunately, but the last time I think I would play here.

Monfils has been struggling with form since the start of the clay-court season. He managed to win just two matches on clay before the French Open. At Roland Garros, he only won one match before losing to Jack Draper in the second round. The last time he got to the round of 16 of a tournament was at the Indian Wells in March.

Nonetheless, Monfils began the season at his best run of form, winning the Auckland Open to claim his 13th tour-level title. He then went on to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open before losing to Ben Shelton. Currently, he holds an 18-12 win-loss record, with most of the defeats coming in the last four months.

Gael Monfils hopes to work harder ahead of the Cincinnati Open

Gael Monfils is known for flaunting his special skills on the court rather than seeking to win titles. His biggest win in over two years came last year, when he came from behind to beat Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the Cincinnati Open. However, in the past four months, he has struggled to display the same special tennis.

When asked what he would do after crashing out of the Canadian Open, he revealed that he would watch the loss and work harder for the next tournament. He added that he will also try to believe that he can get back to winning again:

For me it’s, again, without taking credit from my opponent, but again a bad match from my side, not the quality that I want, not the level that I want to perform. So again, watch it again, try to work hard, even though I do, but to feel this winning trick back a little bit and, yeah, try to still believe, and then keep your head up, even though it’s not easy, but I will try my best.

Next up for Monfils is the Cincinnati Open. The World No. 48 reached the round of 16 of the tournament last year before losing to Holger Rune in three sets. He will hope to bounce back from his losses at this year’s edition of the tournament.
