As if the Las Vegas Raiders season couldn’t get any worse, quarterback Gardner Minshew is out for the rest of the season after going down while playing against the Denver Broncos. Despite the constant pressure of being replaced, Minshew played well on Sunday.
Before the Week 12 fixture, Minshew had 1783 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Furthermore, he boasted the 30th-best quarterback rating of 39.2 out of 32 designated starters in the league in 2024.
The 28-year-old completed 25 passes from 42 attempts for 230 yards, threw one touchdown and made one interception before head coach Antonio Pierce replaced him when the score was 26-16 in the final quarter. While trying to scramble, Minshew broke his collarbone and never came back.

Pierce sent in a mid-season acquisition from the Cardinals, Desmond Ridder, for the remainder of the game. Ridder threw 10 passes and completed 5 for 64 yards as the game ended 29-19. The defeat left the Raiders with a 2-9 record, rooted bottom of the AFC West, and without their starting quarterback for the last six games.
How did Gardner Minshew break his collarbone?
In the fourth quarter, when the Raiders trailed by ten points, Minshew looked to gain some quick yards by running the ball. He initiated the scramble, only to get impeded by two Broncos linebackers ganging up on him.
Cody Barton and Jonathon Cooper sacked Minshew to the ground. The Pro Bowler landed on his left shoulder, which bounced off the turf, and he stayed down until the Raiders medical team escorted him away to the blue tent.

The Athletic’s Tashan Reed spoke with Pierce after the game, who replied Minshew’s shoulder did not look so good.
#Raiders HC Antonio Pierce said QB Gardner Minshew's left shoulder injury "doesn't look good." He'll need further testing to determine the full severity.

Then the bad news was confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who reported that Gardner Minshew broke his collarbone and was out for the rest of the season.
Who can replace Gardner Minshew for the Raiders?
The Raiders already put Aidan O’Connell on the injury list, which leaves Ridder as the only quarterback available. However, there are good deals in the free agent market, and perhaps none better than Daniel Jones.
The New York Giants released Jones a couple of days ago, and he cleared all the waivers, which means he’s available for any QB-needy team to take a gamble on him. Jones played 10 games this year and completed 216 passes for 2070 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 7 INTs to go with 67 carries for 265 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns.
Adding Jones isn’t the worst option, considering they will play for pride in the final months. It’s better to start a player who is fresh rather than someone who has barely played recently.
