Garrett Wilson went into rivalry week against the Miami Dolphins in a rich vein of form despite the New York Jets’ winless start under first-year boss Aaron Glenn. Wilson contributed one touchdown and could have had one more if the officials hadn’t penalized him for offensive pass interference.

Miami took a quickfire 17-3 lead through former Big Apple standout tight end Darren Waller’s first two touchdowns in a Dolphins uniform. Justin Fields replied with a 43-yard scramble touchdown.

The Dolphins’ running back De’Von Achane increased the lead by 14 before back-to-back punts handed the ball to the Jets for one final attempt before the third quarter concluded.

Fields threw a dime toward his trusty wide receiver, Garrett Wilson, moments before the clock struck zero. Wilson shook his marker, Jack Jones, and dived forward in the Dolphins’ end zone to score a touchdown.

Coach Glenn’s jubilation turned into frustration when he noticed the penalty marker on the turf. The officials penalized Wilson for holding onto Jones before scoring the touchdown.

However, Jets fans on social media questioned the referee’s decision after reviewing the footage of OPI from a different angle.

Garrett Wilson’s overturned touchdown could have helped the Jets win over the Dolphins

According to NFL Penalties, the Jets were among the most penalized sides in the first four games of the season. Glenn spoke about rectifying their mistakes, but it was nowhere to be seen on Monday night.

After Wilson’s TD was chalked off, the Dolphins increased their lead by eleven points. It took Glenn’s team until after the two-minute warning to score their second TD.

Fields hit Wilson for a 23-yard touchdown pass inside the Miami goal with barely a minute left until the final whistle. The following two-point conversion cut down the gap to just six points.

Miami burned through the clock to win its first game of the 2025 campaign 21-27. If the Wilson TD had stood, then the game could have entered overtime. Better yet, Glenn could have walked out of South Beach with his first-ever win as a head coach.

The Jets committed 13 penalties for 101 yards. They were flagged a total of 16 times, as compared to the Dolphins’ 6 penalties for 40 yards.

Very disappointing. There’s no way you can win any game with 13 penalties and three turnovers. But what we have to do is go back to work. We have to understand that before we can win games, we have to learn how to not lose games.

Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner also called out the refs for poor officiating.

I’m personally frustrated. I watch football, and I just feel like—and I don’t know if this is wrong to say—but I think I get called for more stuff just based on us not winning. I watch these winning programs, and there’s some egregious things that don’t get called … We don’t win, and I feel like [we] don’t get the calls that we should get, and we get calls we shouldn’t get called for. Obviously, that’s not WHY I want to win. I want to win because I don’t like losing.

Gardner contributed 2 solo and 2 assisted tackles. Wilson amassed 6 catches for 62 yards and 1 touchdown, taking his season’s tally to 2 receptions, 291 yards, and 3 touchdowns.

Justin Fields completed 74.1% of his passes for 226 yards and 1 passing touchdown, aside from 81 yards on the ground and 1 touchdown.
