The New York Jets have a new look this season. In one year, they went from having a future Hall of Fame quarterback to a young quarterback looking for redemption. The team signed Justin Fields to a two-year deal worth $40 million with $30 million of it guaranteed. Apart from the money, there is another good reason that would have convinced Fields to accept New York’s terms.
The aforementioned reason is Garrett Wilson. The star wide receiver has established himself as a significant offensive threat in the NFL. He will now reunite with his college quarterback. Garrett Wilson and Justin Fields both played for Ohio State. They were teammates on the Buckeyes squad and now, they are re-united in the NFL.
The prospect of playing together with his college teammate excited Wilson in the days leading up to the draft:
If that would happen, that would be awesome. I haven’t really thought about where I’d be playing. Anywhere would be a blessing. Definitely, to link back up with Justin-and to do that on the NFL level would be a dream come true, for sure.
Garrett Wilson had said
Wilson’s dream is now coming to fruition. After a rather rocky season which ended with the entire Jets franchise disintegrated, a silver lining has emerged for him. Wilson ended his season with 1,104 yards and 7 touchdowns. However, the Jets finished 5-12 despite having Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers aboard.
The wide receiver has reportedly told those close to him that he is “thrilled” to have Fields onboard. They have a chemistry since college and understand each other’s game. Wilson struggled to develop good on-field chemistry with Aaron Rodgers and they could be seen arguing on the sidelines at times. However, that scene is unlikely to repeat this year with Fields as his quarterback.
Garrett Wilson and Justin Fields played together for two seasons at Ohio State in 2019 and 2020. The duo had 1,031 yards on 66 receptions and 9 touchdowns. The wide receiver has spoken highly of Fields and his leadership style previously.
Even when we thought we weren’t going to have a season, he kept the spirit up and always kept us prepared to go. He made sure the receivers were getting their work in. When the season came around and we got to play, I felt like it came together really well because of those reasons.
Garrett Wilson said about Justin Fields’ mentality
Fields found himself in the leader’s role right after the pandemic ended. He managed to unite the team together and hold their spirits up high in that environment.
The New York Jets offense is going through a complete revamp
For Justin Fields, taking the Jets job may end up being his best or worst decision. This is a valuable second chance for him to prove that he is worthy of being a starting quarterback in this league. However, if he fails then there is a good chance that he does not get another opportunity to start. Apart from Wilson Garrett, Justin Fields has another former teammate on the Jets.

That is tight end Jeremy Ruckert who was his Ohio State teammate. The Jets have made considerable changes to their coaching and roster in the off-season. After finding the right head coach for the team, the Jets have given him the freedom to build the right team.
Aaron Glenn is interested in bringing about a complete cultural change within the franchise, he wants to start by bringing in a positive mindset in the locker room. Opting to bring in a talented quarterback with immense potential was a gamble on their part but considering their options, Fields was their best bet.
