For any basketball fan, watching a game in the arena is a surreal experience. That experience goes up a notch if the game in question is in the playoffs.
The only type of game that can top that is if it is during the Finals. Comedian and actor Gary Owens disclosed that he had tickets to watch then-Miami Heat superstar LeBron James in game 7 of the 2013 NBA finals. Only to miss it as his ex-wife forced him to stay.
I was able to finagle one ticket for myself. I call my ex and say I'm going to Miami, I'm going to the game. She goes 'Your son has a game, how do you think your son would feel if he saw you at the Heat game, and he has a game'. I can't go to his game cuz I'd have to fly commercial. Like literally the only reason I could go was cuz there was a private. I didn't go cuz it was an argument.He revealed this ordeal while on the podcast The OGs;
Basically, Gary Owen had to miss the game or there was a chance he would upset his son. But he still regrets that he could not watch LeBron James‘ MVP-level performance that day.
Gary Owen revealed that he got a ticket to the game as he was shooting for a movie alongside Dwyane Wade‘s partner Gabrielle Union. Had he decided to go for the game, he would have tagged along with Union in her private jet. Therefore, he did not have to spend any money on travel.
Nevertheless, his argument with his former wife was enough for him to drop his plan altogether. Missing out on one of the best games of LeBron James’ career.
LeBron James and the legacy of his 2013 NBA Finals
LeBron James was already an NBA champion at the time with the Miami Heat. Having won in the previous year, the superstar had forged ahead with his sights on another title. But he and his superstar teammates were going up against the dynastical San Antonio Spurs. A team that still had their Big 3 and had a rising superstar on their squad.
But James forged on and took the challenge head-on. However, the prowess of the Spurs teams of those days meant that the series would head to the deciding game 7. In that game, James dominated with 37 points and 12 rebounds to win his second title in a row. That performance led to his game-worn jersey being auctioned for millions.
It was a game that cemented LeBron James’ legacy as one of the best to play. Unfortunately for Gary Owens, he ended up missing a golden opportunity to watch that game, thanks to his family issues.
