Veteran golfer Gary Player recently commented on the career of Jordan Spieth. In a brutal assessment, the 9-time major champion labeled Spieth’s career as a “tragedy” following his fall from the top.

Spieth, the 3-time major champion, was once on top of the golfing world. He won 11 times on the PGA Tour from 2013 to 2017, which included 3 major championships and completion of 3 legs of the career grand slam.

Since then, Spieth has only won twice (the Valero Texas Open in 2021 and the RBC Heritage in 2022) and is now on a long winless drought. The 2025 season was another disappointing one for him as he managed just 4 top-10 finishes in 19 starts following a major wrist surgery last year.

While speaking on The Golf Supply YouTube channel, Gary Player spoke about the career of Spieth. In this, the 89-year-old called him the best golfer in the world but expressed that he had been taught the wrong thing, which led to him going downhill.

Jordan Spieth, I think is the best golfer in the world but in my opinion he was taught the wrong thing. And he just went downhill. He went downhill…A wonderful guy for golf, the best short game, best course management but he just can’t hit the ball. That is a tragedy.

Player has been highly supportive of Spieth. Earlier this year, before the PGA Championship, the South African retired golfer took to his X account to share that he was rooting for him to win the tournament and complete the career grand slam.

Unfortunately, Spieth would have a round to forget on Thursday. With a score of 76, he found himself in trouble. Despite a score of 68 in the second round, the American international finished with a 2-over par score and missed the cut, and once again fell short of his quest to complete the career grand slam.

Jordan Spieth suffered heartbreak at FedEx St. Jude Championship

Jordan Spieth‘s poor run of form continued last week. At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first event of the 2025 FedEx Cup playoffs, Spieth missed out on the BMW Championship following a T38th finish and dropped out of the playoffs.

Spieth needed a top performance in Memphis last week to keep his 2025 season alive. Following a 1-under 69 score on Thursday, the 32-year-old failed to break par in the next two rounds on Friday and Saturday.

In the final round, Spieth did start strong and made 2 birdies in the first 5 holes. He would then go bogey-birdie-bogey on the 6th, 7th and 8th holes to finish 1-unde par on the front nine.

On the back nine, Spieth made 2 more birdies on the 13th and 16th holes. However, a bogey on the final 18th hole saw him finish the day 2-under par with a score of 68. He finished the tournament with a 3-under par score and was tied for 38th place.

This saw him drop down 6 positions in the FedEx Cup rankings and eventually miss out on the BMW Championship by 4 positions.

This performance also saw him drop down in the Ryder Cup standings. Given his current form, there are chances that he might not be one of the 6 picks of captain Keegan Bradley in the upcoming days. He has been part of this tournament in each of the last 5 editions. This streak might come to an end this year.
