Gautam Gambhir has been announced as the head coach of Team India. He will be succeeding Rahul Dravid and his entourage, whose contract came to the end at the T20 World Cup finale in Bridge Town.
Jay Shah took to his X, formerly known as Twitter to make the announcement. Gautam Gambhir will be kickstarting his tenure as the India team coach with the Men in Blue playing three ODIs and three T20Is later in this month.
India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I'm honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!Gautam Gambhir posted on X after being appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team
In the official press release that confirmed Gambhir’s appointment, it also bade farewell to the likes of Vikram Rathour (batting coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach) and T Dilip (fielding coach). Wishing them all the best for their future the note also valued their contribution to the Indian cricket team.
Gambhir will be taking over a team whose recent past has been rife with success. Under the reign of Rahul Dravid, India reached the finals of both the WTCs, while also being the finalist of the 2023 World Cup before going onto win the T20 World Cup in Bridge Town.
A glance at Gautam Gambhir’s legacy in the Indian cricket circuit
The former Indian opener was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders set-up recently and propelled them to their third championship which came after a prolonged hiatus of almost a decade. Before leading his former side to the pinnacle of IPL glory, he was the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants who did phenomenally well in their first two seasons, qualifying for the play-offs despite faltering in the final hurdle.
Gauti has always been known for his cutthroat aggression, whether as a player or as a mentor or expert. He has not shied away from taking digs at superstars whenever and wherever needed. Gambhir’s contribution to Team India has been immense in the past where he played crucial knocks in the finals of the 2007 T20 World Cup, belting 75 against a formidable Pakistan while bossing another continental neighbour in the 2011 final, namely Sri Lanka where he blasted a full-blown 97.
