In Short
  • Gautam Gambhir criticized players for prioritizing individual milestones over team success after India's T20 World Cup win.
  • His comments were perceived as a subtle jab at Virat Kohli, who is known for taking time to reach personal milestones.
  • Gambhir emphasized a shift towards an aggressive, team-first batting approach, rejecting conservative scoring strategies.

Following India’s historic victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup final, head coach Gautam Gambhir made an unexpected statement regarding his strategy. He clearly criticized players who slow down to reach individual milestones, which many fans interpreted as a jab at Virat Kohli.

The Men in Blue secured successive T20 World Cup titles after defeating New Zealand in the tournament final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Batting first, India raced to a massive total of 255/5, guided by in-form Sanju Samson’s 89, and brisk fifties from Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan.

The Kiwis looked out of the chase from the very beginning, and they were ultimately bowled out for 159 runs, with Jasprit Bumrah picking up a four-wicket haul.

India’s staggering 250-plus total in a high-pressure match like the final has been a hallmark of the team’s aggressive approach in the shortest format under head coach Gautam Gambhir. Although Gambhir’s ‘high-risk, high-reward’ model is consistently questioned, it has delivered productive results. Since his appointment in 2024, the Indian T20I team has maintained a perfect winning streak.

A triumphant Gambhir candidly reflected upon his approach after the T20 WC win. The 44-year-old talked about pushing his team to forgo aiming for conservative T20I totals of 160 and 170, and instead pursue 200-plus totals, even if it meant ‘high risk’. Furthermore, the 44-year-old suggested that his players and the team would never discuss personal milestones, with the focus rather being on winning trophies.

My simple philosophy, and Surya’s [Suryakumar Yadav] too, has always been that milestones don’t matter. It’s the trophies that matter. For too long in Indian cricket, we have spoken about milestones.

Furthermore, Gambhir made a specific statement that many believed was an indirect criticism of Virat Kohli. He took the example of Samson, who felt just short of a century in each of the final three matches, finishing with scores of 97, 89, and 88.

Gambhir emphasized that if Sanju Samson had slowed down to prioritize reaching his milestone, India would have scored 20 to 30 fewer runs. He stressed that a player needs the courage to score a hundred quickly, rather than deliberating over it for three or four balls.

You can see the last three games what Sanju [Samson] did. 97 not out, 89, 88. Imagine if he had been playing for a milestone, probably we wouldn’t have got 250… If someone is batting on 94, does he have the courage to go and get a hundred next ball rather than thinking about getting it in three or four balls.

Gautam Gambhir‘s remarks were visibly endorsed by captain Suryakumar Yadav, who was seated next to him. Moreover, it comes at a time when Kohli is reportedly in a conflict with the head coach regarding his continued selection in the Indian team.

Gautam Gambhir’s ‘milestone’ dig leaves fans in splits, pointing to a possible Virat Kohli reference

After India’s T20 World Cup win, head coach Gautam Gambhir was dismissive about the scrutiny that his aggressive cricketing approach has faced. The 44-year-old talked about a change in mindset within the team, with a seemingly sly reference to former captain Virat Kohli.

The Indian coach stated that he encouraged the current T20I players to adopt an aggressive, team-first approach to batting, rather than playing cautiously. He shared that the players should score quickly at all times, while noting that this philosophy is a shift from what players adhered to in the past. Many perceived the comment to be a jab aimed at Kohli, who is known to take time after getting into the 40s and 90s.

Kohli fans took offence, with many stating that the Team India head coach is still reliant on the 37-year-old’s runs in the 50-over format. A few others slammed captain Suryakumar Yadav for his poor form in the final, especially since he agreed with Gambhir’s remarks. One fan even publicly shared Gambhir’s batting statistics, pointing out that he had a career strike-rate of only around 120 in T20s.

Another fan quickly highlighted statistics indicating that Kohli completed his centuries by hitting a boundary 61 percent of the time throughout his career, compared to Gautam Gambhir, who reached the century mark with a boundary 55 percent of the time.
