Indian Cricket Team’s Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir, is set to face a slew of questions from the Board Of Cricket Control In India (BCCI) for the recent 3-0 whitewash that the team suffered in the recent home Test series against New Zealand. The defeat ended India’s strong dominance in Test cricket at home as they lost their first Test series since 2012. It also marked the team’s first whitewash in a Test series at home since they started playing this format of the game.
After the T20 World Cup 2024 win, Rahul Dravid stepped down from the post and Gambhir was appointed. The Board gave him full control to run the team and also gave him the allowance to select his own support staff. He was given Abhishek Nayar, Morne Morkel and Ryan Ten Doeschate as his support staff as per his wish.
Reports said that Gambhir wanted a raging turner in Mumbai after losing the second Test in Pune and this particular demand has also come under scrutiny after the Indian batters succumbed against the Kiwi spinners.
Gautam Gambhir’s future might be on the line in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25
Reports also said that Gambhir will be closely watched in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Team India will travel to Australia for a five-match Test series starting on November 22 in Perth. Gambhir’s future is on the line as per the result of the series.
India has won the series in the last two tours of Australia and Gambhir will be expected to win the Test series yet again given that India needs to win four out of the five Test matches to qualify for the WTC final.
The futures of senior batters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are also on the line. They have performed very poorly with the bat in the home series against the Kiwis. Sharma scored 91 runs in three Tests at an average of 15.16 while Kohli scored 93 runs at an average of 15.50.
If they fail to produce the goods in the upcoming Test series, they might even be looked past in the forthcoming series. All in all, it is a proper testing time for the Indian Cricket fraternity.
