Team India’s Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir, arrived for the press conference ahead of departing for Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He took a direct dig at Ricky Ponting for questioning the position of Virat Kohli in the Indian Test team.

The former Australian captain had stated that no other player apart from Kohli would have remained in the Test team if they had scored just two centuries in the last five years. Gambhir set his stance straight asking Ponting to mind about Australian cricket only, and not concern himself with legendary Indian players of the likes of Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

He backed both of the stalwarts to make a strong comeback in the Australia tour after the unfortunate happenings of the home series against New Zealand.

Not concerned about Kohli, Rohit. What does Ponting have to do with Indian cricket? He should look into Australian cricket. They are in good stead; proved players. There is hunger, especially what’s happened in the last series. Ponting should think about Australian cricket and what concerns he has for Indian cricket. The hunger in that dressing room in important for me and I feel there is a lot of hunger. Virat and Rohit will bounce back.

Sharma scored 91 runs in three matches, while Kohli managed just 93 runs in the series against New Zealand, which proved disastrous for most of the Indian batters. India were whitewashed 3-0 at home, marking their first Test series loss at home since 2012. It was also their first-ever home Test series whitewash since they began playing Test cricket.

Gautam Gambhir believes experience of players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will help the youngsters in Australia

India will play a five-match Test series against Australia which is scheduled to start on November 22 in Perth. Gambhir feels that the experience of senior pros like Kohli and Sharma will help the younger players in a country like Australia.

The Indian Head Coach said that the team has some of the finest young players who are mentally tough and will do great things for the country in the future. Meanwhile, the Indian captain has not travelled with the team to Australia.

He is reportedly set to miss the first Test due to personal reasons and Jasprit Bumrah might step in as the captain in his absence. It will also be important to see whether KL Rahul, Shubman Gill or Abhimanyu Easwaran opens the batting in his absence in Perth.
