The most recent talking point in Indian Cricket has been the future of KL Rahul in the Test side. He has been struggling with his form and inconsistent scores in the longest format of the game. Rahul has been under tremendous pressure and is facing severe criticism from all corners. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir has backed him ahead of the start of the second Test match against New Zealand in Pune.

Gambhir threw his support behind Rahul and dismissed the social media trolling of the Karnataka batter. Rahul needs the support at this moment given that he has had some decent scores in red-ball cricket. However, it is not sure whether he will be part of the upcoming Test match against the Black Caps.

Social media does not matter one bit. What the team management and leadership group thinks is very important. He is batting really well, and had a decent knock in Kanpur (against Bangladesh on a difficult wicket).

Gautam Gambhir told reporters a day ahead of the Pune Test when asked about KL Rahul’s place in the team

Gambhir added that Rahul will soon start scoring runs and shut the social media trolling that he is receiving. He went on to state that the Karnataka batter is batting really well, and has all the potential in him and hence Rahul is being backed by the leadership group.

Sarfaraz Khan scored a century in the first Test against New Zealand putting more pressure on KL Rahul

Rahul scored a duck in the first innings of the Bengaluru Test as India were dismissed for just 46 runs. In the second innings, he scored 12 runs while the other batters in the top six were among the runs. Sarfaraz Khan batted at number four and scored his maiden Test century, ending his innings with a 150.

With Shubman Gill set to be back in the side and batting at number three, it is very much tough to drop Khan who just scored his maiden Test century. So, despite all the backings from Gambhir, Rahul might be dropped from the XI in the Pune Test.

Rahul scored a swift 68 during the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh and will need to be back among the runs if he wants to secure his place in the side for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia starting from November 22.
