The BCCI has announced that Gautam Gambhir will be the new Head Coach of the Indian Men’s Cricket Team. He will have his contract till the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2027. Gambhir will be replacing Rahul Dravid, whose contract expired after the T20 World Cup 2024 win.
Gambhir is experienced enough and is a sensational tactician. However, he will definitely have some big shoes to fill in. Under Dravid, India won the T20 World Cup 2024 undefeated and also won the Asia Cup 2023. On the other hand, they qualified for the semi final in the T20 World Cup 2022, the final of the World Test Championship 2023 and the final of the ODI World Cup 2023.
As per reports, Gautam Gambhir wants the former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel to replace Paras Mhambrey as the bowling coach of the team. Morkel was one of the best fast bowlers in his time and also played under Gambhir for KKR in the IPL.
Morkel has had discussions and meetings with the BCCI and the Board is thinking about the proposal.
Morne Morkel has served as the bowling coach of Lucknow Super Giants when Gautam Gambhir was their mentor
Morne Morkel served as the bowling coach of the Lucknow Super Giants, when Gautam Gambhir was their mentor. In both the seasons, LSG qualified for the playoffs and had a good run.
Morkel also served as the coach of the Pakistan Cricket Team during the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. However, he resigned even before his contract ended due to the below-par performance of the team in the World Cup.
Morkel has been a sensational bowler during his time and always troubled the batters with his steep bounce and seam movement. He has played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20Is and has picked up 544 wickets. BCCI has had a policy of keeping only Indian coaches in the setup and not approving any international coach in the last few years.
So the fans will need to wait and watch if they do approve Morkel as the bowling coach. Although, Zaheer Khan and Vinay Kumar are also in the running. Meanwhile, KKR has approached Rahul Dravid to take over as the mentor of the team after Gambhir left for the national team.
