India have stepped into a new era and it is set to kickstart with a three-game T20I series against Sri Lanka followed by a three-game ODI series. Gautam Gambhir has been announced as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team and his era will start with the tour of Sri Lanka.
Latest reports are stating that Gambhir wants the senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah to be present for the 3-game ODI series vs Sri Lanka. The ODI series will kickstart on August 2.
The report also said that Gambhir feels that the senior players have rested well during their break following the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. So he feels that these players will be fit and fine to play in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Moreover, he thinks that as there is a six-week break before the start of the Test series against Bangladesh, the players should be available keeping in mind the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, following which, Sharma, Kohli and Jadeja announced their retirement from T20I format. Moreover, Bumrah was rested for the five- game T20I series against Zimbabwe and he will even be rested for the three T20Is against Sri Lanka.
However, reports also stated that the BCCI was willing to rest them for the ODI series as well. Gambhir now wants them playing in the series.
Recent reports also say that Suryakumar Yadav will captain the Indian Cricket Team in the T20I series against Sri Lanka and will be the new T20I captain for India. Earlier reports stated that KL Rahul would have served as the captain of the team in the ODI series in the absence of Sharma. However, with the Hitman now featuring in the series, he will definitely lead the squad.
