On Wednesday, Cleveland Guardians star Gavin Williams received a standing ovation from the New York Mets fans at Citi Field after he almost threw a no-hitter against them. After the game, he would thank them for this ‘awesome‘ reception.

The 26-year-old has had a mixed season this year. He headed into the game on Wednesday with his team looking to sweep the National League side.

The pitcher would make some impressive saves in the very first inning against Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. The Guardians would later find themselves in control of the game with home runs from David Fry and Angel Martinez giving them a 3-0 lead.

A two-out triple from Gabriel Arias would extend their lead to 4-0 in the 6th inning. After Juan Soto and Alonso grounded out in the bottom of the 6th inning, the fans would start booing their team.

Williams continued to dominate the Mets from the mound and kept them from scoring. In the bottom of the 9th inning, he first struck out Lindor, the former Guardians star, to get within two outs of a no-hitter.

Mets $765 million man, Juan Soto, then crushed his dream. The Dominican international broke up the no-hitter bid with a solo shot to center field. Despite his best efforts, center field Angel Martinez was unable to rob Soto.

Williams then managed to get Alonso out and exited the game after 126 pitches through 8.2 innings. He struck out 6 batters and issued 4 walks. As he made his way off the field, the Mets fans would give him a standing ovation.

While speaking with the reporters after the game, Williams expressed that it was a “nice” moment and appreciated their gesture.

It’s nice, especially getting that from a different team’s fan base. It’s awesome. It doesn’t usually happen. I appreciate it from them.

Relief pitcher Hunter Gaddis would then come out from the bullpen and get the final out to win the game 4-1 for his team. The Guardians thus proceeded to sweep the Mets and improve their record to 59-55 for the season.

Meanwhile, the Mets have now lost 8 out of their last 9 games and have seen their record fall to 63-52 after being 62-44 at one point. One of the major issues for them has been their offense with Soto, Alonso, and Lindor all going through some slumps this season.

Cubs announcer inadvertently ‘jinxes’ Gavin Williams no-hitter bid against NY Mets

Several baseball fans would tune into the Cleveland Guardians-New York Mets game as Gavin Williams flirted with a no-hitter. In the bottom of the 9th inning, a Chicago Cubs announcer seemingly inadvertently ‘jinxed‘ his no-no bid.

As the action unfolded in Queens, New York, the Cubs were facing the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. With Williams being 2 outs away from the no-hitter, announcer Boog Sciambi admitted that he was watching the Guardians-Mets game as well.

As he continued to speak with Cubs’ reporter Elise Menaker, he would notify her that Soto had just homered off Williams and that he had now turned off the game. Jim Deshaies, who was commentating alongside Sciambi, would make a joke about how he ‘jinxed‘ the Guardians’ pitcher from far away.

You can jinx a no-hitter from a thousand miles away.

Unfortunately, the Guardians will have to wait longer for another no-hitter from them. The last time they had a no-hitter was 44 years ago in 1981, when Len Barker threw a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays. This is the longest active no-hitter drought in the majors.
