Jessica Pegula became the first American to lose the US Open final this season as compatriot Taylor Fritz also ended up losing the title to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Pegula, who for the first time reached a Grand Slam semifinal and final, lost to World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka who became a Singles Grand Slam champion for the third time.
Pegula is the daughter of Terry Pegula and Kim Pegula, the billionaires and owners of multiple sporting teams, including the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Because of her status, Pegula is facing criticism from a section of tennis fans which led to one fan asking questions about why Pegula has been slammed for being too rich. Former tennis ace from Canada, Genie Bouchard, replied to the post although it’s not clear what the tweet implied.

Some fans think Bouchard took a dig at Pegula for failing to win the title despite being the daughter of a billionaire, while some feel Bouchard just supported Pegula. Bouchard retired in 2023 and was able to make it to a Grand Slam final just once. In 2014 Wimbledon, the 30-year-old lost to Petra Kvitova in straight sets in the final.
Jessica Pegula’s father watched his daughter’s semifinal match from the stands
Jessica Pegula‘s father Terry Pegula chose not to watch his daughter’s matches from the stands but made a surprise visit to watch Pegula play the semifinals against Karolina Muchova. Though Pegula and her dad have a good relationship, it’s not the case when it comes to tennis as she joked once that she and her dad are like “oil and water.”
Dad and I are like oil and water on the tennis court - it does not mix well. He definitely always pushed me to do better. To work hard, always work hard, you can always outwork somebody. He's very old school.Jessica Pegula said in a 2021 interview on the Bills Pod Squad podcast
On her mom, Pegula said she is more off-court as she takes care of the tennis star’s diet, recovery, training, etc. Even Kim is rarely seen in the stands as she too gets nervous while watching her daughter play.
With her latest tournament, Pegula once again climbed to the third position on the WTA rankings with 6,220 points. Iga Swiatek, who was defeated by Pegula in the quarterfinals, continues to stand at the top of the rankings, while Aryna Sabalenka occupies the second position.
