Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley are currently the two best head coaches in women’s college basketball, and any battles between them are a feast for the eyes of those who cherish the best.

The UConn head coach has made it a habit of building championship-winning teams over the four-plus decades he has been leading the Huskies.

Twelve NCAA Division 1 national championships are a testament to his method, which has provided some of the best players in women’s basketball history.

But Staley has developed her own blueprint. Unsurprisingly, it took a similar timeframe for it to bear fruit, and now, the South Carolina Gamecocks have become a basketball powerhouse that goes after the best high school recruits.

As mentioned above, when the two meet, it tends to create some of the best basketball that one can watch, and that was what was on display in the NCAA Final Four matchup.

Geno Auriemma’s undefeated and defending champion Huskies were the consensus tournament favorites, but it seems Dawn Staley wanted to upset that notion.

Her Gamecocks produced a defensive masterclass that stopped the otherwise efficient UConn stars from creating anything. When the final buzzer rang, Staley had usurped Auriemma.

Usually, the 72-year-old is good at handling losses. But in this situation, as he walked up to shake hands with his fellow Hall of Famer, the UConn head coach started arguing with Dawn Staley.

The latter visibly tried to make him understand, but it seems the winningest coach in women’s basketball history was not happy with something the Gamecocks coach did.

Fans tear into Geno Auriemma for his behavior towards Dawn Staley

It so happened that this entire exchange was heated enough for it to quickly spread on social media. From sporting greats such as Martina Navratilova, to Lisa Leslie, to current and former NBA and NFL stars, everyone was miffed.

They felt that for Geno Auriemma to go off on Dawn Staley for apparently missing a pregame handshake was him behaving like a sore loser. Fans took to social media to call the legendary coach out, examples of which are below.

In the past, it has been noted that Geno Auriemma tends to create some drama to shift focus away from his players. However, fans felt that in this instance, it was likely that he was embarrassed at being outcoached by someone who was in the running to be the New York Knicks’ head coach.

Geno Auriemma reveals why he confronted Dawn Staley

After the heartbreaking loss, Geno Auriemma made his way to the media room, where he was asked if he had any regrets about his heated rant at ESPN’s Holly Rowe about the officiating, which he felt was atrocious.

Once he made it clear that he did not regret it, as he was irked by the lopsided calls, he then paused a bit before revealing why he called out Dawn Staley.

The protocol is, before the game, you meet at halfcourt. Anybody ever see that before? The two coaches meet at halfcourt, and they shake hands… they announce it on the loudspeaker. I waited there for like three minutes.

Auriemma said

Even though South Carolina’s head coach did shake his hand pregame, her UConn compatriot was referring to another tradition she missed.

Whether it was mind games or not, Staley ended up with the upper hand as her Gamecocks are about to contend for another NCAA Championship, whereas her rival will now look towards next season.
