The Las Vegas Raiders’ 2025 season hit another low on Sunday after a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Raiders have just two wins so far and lost a chance to add a third win, especially considering that the game looked within their reach until a failed two-point conversion sealed the result.

Quarterback Geno Smith put together one of his strongest outings of the year, throwing for 284 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception. His performance kept Las Vegas competitive through four quarters and overtime. After Jacksonville scored first in the extra period, Smith responded by finding Brock Bowers in the end zone for another touchdown.

The Raiders then made a bold call, going for two points and the win. But on the decisive play, Smith hesitated, then threw a pass that was tipped by Jaguars defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton, ending the game at 29–30.

When asked post-game why he held onto the ball instead of making a quick throw to Tyler Lockett, who appeared open, Smith kept his answer brief.

That’s football, brother.

Geno Smith said

He later added that the play call was solid and credited the defender instead of focusing on his own hesitation.

We had the play. Chip [Kelly] called a great one. Got the look we wanted. Tyler was open in the back of the end zone. We win if the guy doesn’t jump and tip it. Hats off to him, he made the play.

That comment didn’t sit well with some fans, who accused Smith of dodging responsibility for the missed chance.

Despite Sunday’s loss, the performance marked a rare bright spot in what’s been a rough stretch for the veteran quarterback. Smith had thrown six interceptions in his previous four games, including a shutout defeat to the Chiefs. The Raiders now drop to 2–6, their playoff hopes slipping fast as trade rumors swirl around the team.

Fans’ blood boiling after Geno Smith’s excuse

The former Seattle Seahawks quarterback’s inability to take responsibility for his miscues has fans ripping into him. Geno Smith leads the league in most interceptions thrown, along with Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins, both of whom have thrown 11 interceptions.

In eight games, Smith has thrown at least one interception pass in six games. He has two games with three interceptions: Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers and Week 4 against the Chicago Bears.

In eight games, he has an average quarterback rating of 39.3. His highest so far was 72.2 against the Washington Commanders in Week 3. This is followed by the win against the New England Patriots in the season opener, and followed by the Jacksonville Jaguars game.

In some ways, Smith played his best game, but his excuse rather than accountability hasn’t sat well with the fans. Many have openly called for a trade of Smith while noting that missing two open wideouts is not acceptable.

The fans did not miss a look at the other quarterbacks in the locker room. One such fan noted that last year’s quarterback, Aidan O’Connell, had defeated the Jaguars last year. Geno Smith was brought in by Pete Carroll and the Raiders management to replace a struggling Aidan O’Connell, and Smith ended up losing to a team O’Connell had defeated. The fans have called for Smith to be replaced with either AOC or Kenny Pickett.

Geno Smith, who played in Seattle and excelled in production, switched teams for an underdog team and threw shade on them. While the Seahawks are 6-2 with Sam Darnold drawing dimes and producing massive wins, the fans were quick to catch on to the comparison with the Raiders.

The AFC West is turning upto be a battle, with the Denver Broncos leading the charge with 7-2, followed by Chargers with 6-3 and Chiefs 5-4. It sure will be a hard climb to make the playoffs.
