Maxx Crosby has been waiting for a new quarterback to join the Las Vegas Raiders after they released Gardner Minshew earlier this week. The Raiders finally made a move and trade for veteran Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks.
While everyone has been busy with wide receiver DK Metcalf’s possible exit, the Seahawks quietly sent Geno to Vegas in exchange for a third-round pick. Adding Smith gave them a veteran safety valve and stability, which the Raiders have been searching for since Derek Carr’s departure in 2023 to the New Orleans Saints.
All-Pro pass rusher Maxx Crosby, who signed a 3-year, $106.5M contract extension with the Raiders a couple of days ago, shared his thoughts about Smith becoming the new quarterback of the Vegas franchise.
“LFG!!!!” Maxx Crosby posted the message shortly after NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Geno Smith’s trade to the Raiders.

The Raiders have one of the largest salary caps ahead of the 2025 season. They are projected to have $112.5 million to work with, only second to the New England Patriots. It enables them to make more additions to the quarterback room if Tom Brady wishes to. Aside from Smith, the Raiders have Aidan O’Connell and a sixth overall pick in the 2025 draft.
“I would say [it’s] up in the air on the first pick with the Titans, I wouldn’t rule out Cam Ward there.”

Geno Smith reunites with his former head coach at Raiders
Smith was in quarterback purgatory following his release from the New York Jets. He bounced around from the Giants to the Chargers before finding a second wind in Seattle. He signed for the Seahawks in 2019 and competed with Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson for three seasons.

In 2022, the Seahawks made Smith the starting quarterback and repaid the franchise back with consecutive Pro Bowls along with a Comeback Player of the Year award. His coach during the second phase of his life was veteran Pete Carroll, who stepped down after 13 years in April 2024.
Smith wasn’t happy with Carroll’s sudden departure.
That day is a day I’ll probably remember forever. Just because of how things happened for me here. Obviously Coach Carroll, big influence on my career, helped me out a bunch when I came to this organization, really helped me and thrust me into this spotlight that I’m in now.

The good news for Smith is that now he can continue his growth under Carroll, as the 73-year-old (oldest head coach in the NFL) is currently the head coach of the Raiders. Brady played a big part in bringing back Carroll to the NFL.

Smith played 17 games for the Seahawks in 2024 and posted a 10-7 record (best of his career). The former second-round pick recorded a career-best 407 completions for 4,320 yards, 23 overall touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. The Seahawks finished second, but only the Los Angeles Rams qualified for the playoffs from their division.
