Denver Broncos GM George Paton made his trust in QB Zach Wilson known ahead of their season opener. The 54-year-old stated that he was sure of Wilson’s talents despite not knowing him as a person.
Wilson made the Broncos’ 53-man roster on Tuesday as one of the three quarterbacks with the squad. This means a fresh new start for the 2021 NFL Draft second overall pick after a disappointing time with the New York Jets.
Although Bo Nix is declared as the starting QB for the Broncos in the 2024-25 season for the time being, it doesn’t dampen Wilson’s chances. Paton said that Wilson has starter capability and could potentially be a starter at some point in the league. He also agreed that there are a couple of stuff to straighten out.
No doubt. He [Wilson] has starter tools all over. It’s been pretty cool just watching him. Really, no expectations. He can just go out there and play football. He has all the starting traits in the world. He’s still working through some things. You could see the really good last week in the game (against the Cardinals). He can throw it as good as anyone in the league. ... I do think he’ll be a starter in this league.Broncos GM George Paton told reporters on Tuesday
George Paton has faith in Wilson, stating that the team loves the person he is. He added that Wilson is smart and played really well in the preseason, thereby making a cut into the main team.
Zach Wilson spent three miserable seasons with the Jets until they traded Wilson to the Broncos alongside a seventh-round pick in return for a sixth-round pick. He played in all three preseason games for Broncos since joining. His popularity rose in ranks after his unbelievable game against the Arizona Cardinals on the preseason finale three days ago. His stats include 16 of 25 for 251 yards, two TDs and no interceptions.
Broncos in dilemma over Zach Wilson or Jarett Stidham for QB2
The Denver Broncos have until Sep. 8 to decide their backup quarterback, with Bo Nix being the obvious starting quarterback. The question is, who will HC Sean Peyton play as QB2? Will it be the transformed Wilson or Jarett Stidham?
Stidham, has already made claims to be the starting QB. A couple of days ago, the 28-year-old told reporters that he is disappointed not to be a starter. He carries experience having played a backup to Tom Brady at New England Patriots and played a year at the Las Vegas Raiders. Stidham also added that he will impart knowledge to the rookie Nix.
Zach Wilson has shown impressive performance in the three games he’s played so far. The Cardinals game, in particular, has shifted the perceptions of at least a few fans. Wilson showcased exceptional touchdown drives and made some great throws, earning the approval of the team’s GM. However, his previous reputation might still be a challenge for him moving forward.
The Broncos will start their season against the Seahawks, aiming for their first postseason appearance since their Super Bowl win in 2015. They will face Wilson’s former team, the Jets, later this month at MetLife Stadium.
