George Pickens‘ trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Dallas Cowboys was classified as a double-edged sword. The Cowboys’ front office knew that Pickens had a history of creating trouble for the team, on and off the field. However, owner Jerry Jones took a chance with the former second-round draft pick because the upside was endless.

Jones’s gamble has borne fruit. Pickens balled out during the Cowboys’ week 11 game against the Las Vegas Raiders, even though he sat out the first series along with CeeDee Lamb.

According to Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s writer, Nick Harris, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer decided to bench the two wideouts because “they missed some things.”

Regardless, Pickens became quarterback Dak Prescott‘s number one target on the night. Prescott connected 9 times with Pickens on 11 targets for 144 yards (16.0 yards per catch) and scored 1 receiving touchdown.

The Cowboys won 33-16 and improved to 4-5-1.

George Pickens is proving the doubters wrong

Pickens left Pittsburgh with a not-so-good image of his personality. According to reports, NFL teams laughed at the Steelers for offering Pickens in a swap deal.

The Cowboys dared to take a chance with Pickens, who had 174 catches for 2,841 yards and scored 13 touchdowns in 48 games for the Steelers. Prescott and Lamb welcomed Pickens with open arms, and he has repaid that trust tenfold.

Ryan Clark’s biggest fear did not materialize. Instead, Pickens acted as a leader. Despite playing second fiddle to Lamb, Pickens acted maturely. The 24-year-old won over the Cowboys faithful when he led the offense in Lamb’s absence, who missed a few games due to injury.

Ahead of the Raiders game, Pickens had 764 receiving yards from 49 receptions and 6 touchdowns. His tally improved to 58 receptions for 908 yards and 7 touchdowns. Only the Seahawks’ Jaxson Smith-Njigba is having a better year.

Jones traded a 2026 sixth-round and a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to the Steelers in exchange for Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick.

The Cowboys need Pickens at his best as they make a push for an NFC wildcard spot. They’re currently on the outside looking in, but a few wins could turn the playoff picture in their favor.

However, it is easier said than done. Next Sunday, the Cowboys play the Philadelphia Eagles, who bagged a win in the reverse fixture.
