After the Dallas Cowboys ended their season earlier than they had hoped, all eyes were on Jerry Jones and his decision about defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus‘ future.
Time and time again, the billionaire held off on questions about the DC’s future when it was apparent that the defense had become the team’s Achilles heel. To Jones’ credit, he wanted to see how things panned out after he brought in Quinnen Williams and Logan Wilson via trade and was expecting the return of several key players from injury.
After a good couple of games, a fully healthy defense was still showing signs of incompetence, which eventually led to them missing out on the playoffs.
Earlier, Jerry Jones finally made the move that everyone associated with football was waiting for and fired Matt Eberflus from his position. What caught the attention of some was that star wide receiver George Pickens liked the post.
His ‘like’ soon went viral, as this was from a player on the offensive side of the ball. For him to like Eberflus’ dismissal probably gave a hint to what the rest of the players, particularly those on the other side, thought of their now-former defensive coordinator.

Maybe as a wideout, who produced his best season to date, he was likely happy that the primary reason for their failure was no longer going to affect them.
Quinnen Williams’ IG post after Matt Eberflus’ dismissal liked by several teammates
Many were left wondering if George Pickens, a wide receiver, was happy with Matt Eberflus’ dismissal, and what the defensive players would be feeling after their coach was let go.
The answer lay in star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams’ post on Instagram less than an hour after the Cowboys’ announcement. The post included quite a few pictures of his brief time with the team, and this caption:
Great things are coming, so happy to be a Cowboy.
Quinnen Williams wrote on IG
His caption may have been as cryptic as they come, as it points to him having a great run with the Dallas Cowboys, but in the future. That is indicative of how he believes his career would pan out with Matt Eberflus not coaching him anymore.
For someone who has experience playing under famed defensive wizards Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich, it seems he wanted to say what he truly felt about Eberflus’ run as his coordinator.

The theory that this post may have been a diss at his former defensive coordinator was corroborated when many of his teammates from their side of the field ended up liking the post.
Jerry Jones will hire fourth DC in 4 years after the Matt Eberflus experiment failed
Jerry Jones had high expectations for Matt Eberflus when he hired the 55-year-old after his disappointing stint as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. The 83-year-old always mentioned the latter’s experience and hoped that would be enough to make the Cowboys a top-tier team.

Now that the experiment has failed, the real estate and energy magnate is back on the board to look for his fourth defensive coordinator in four seasons. It would not be easy to pry away someone who is already good at their position on other teams. With several head coaching vacancies opening up, Jones might struggle to pull someone specific for that role.
Moreover, the owner-cum-GM will also have to keep in mind that some players were possibly frustrated with the way Matt Eberflus ran their unit.
Trevon Diggs was the most vocal and ended up losing his job. However, he was expendable after a series of incidents and subpar performances.
The same cannot be said about the rest, and for that matter, Jerry Jones needs someone who can unleash them next season, as his team is a good defense away from contending for a Super Bowl.
