George Pickens hasn’t officially been ordained as a Dallas Cowboys player, and yet he’s already taking swipes at his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. According to various reports, Pickens commented on an Instagram post bashing the AFC North club for trading him close to his first big check.

On Sunday, Pickens was supposed to be on his way to Dallas. Before he boarded the flight, he commented that the Steelers are a ‘cheap’ organization that prefers to cast a player away rather than give him a new contract.

They the cheapest organization. Ain’t no stacking year after year they gone let them n**** go too soon it’s time.

This message has led many to believe Pickens called the Steelers out because they didn’t want to pay him. The Steelers made him available, but reports suggested that most teams laughed at the idea of signing Pickens, even though he recorded 16.3 yards per catch in 40 starts (the most by any receiver during that time).

The Cowboys were the only team interested in the former Georgia player. They traded a third-round pick in 2026 and a fifth-round pick in 2027 in exchange for Pickens and a 2027 sixth-rounder.

Steelers fans are a proud bunch and don’t take criticism lightly. They criticized Pickens for being a loudmouth. It worked because, after a short while, another message popped up on his Instagram.

Literally on a plane. No service. Just landed and seen straight lies from Pitt fans. Stop with AI trying to make a story. I’m happy for everything the Steel City did for me. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there.

Did the Steelers trade George Pickens because of a contract dispute?

Reporters asked general manager Omar Khan if the reason behind trading Pickens was money. Khan denied the hypothesis and claimed they wanted a fresh start.

Khan and the Steelers’ brass spoke with Pickens’ agent, David Mulugheta. They wanted to know where both parties stood. After the conversation, they decided it was best to part ways.

We discussed where things have been with George, where they are, and where things could go with George. This trade made sense for everyone… Lot of serious conversations, honest conversations. We just felt that a fresh start for both sides were the right thing.

The decision created ample confusion among the Steelers fans. Everyone knew their team was looking to strengthen the offense. They signed DK Metcalf for the exact same purpose and remain on the hunt for Aaron Rodgers.

However, the Pickens trade weakened their offense considerably. On top of it, they still don’t have an answer on Rodgers, who might shift his focus elsewhere.

So, if the contract wasn’t the main reason, then what was it? Former NFL wide receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh speculated the Steelers’ mood swing didn’t happen in one day. People were fed up with Pickens.

George Pickens had stepped over and crossed the line a bit too many times, and I know people that play with the Steelers.

TJ Houshmandzadeh said on the Up On Game podcast

Houshmandzadeh revealed that Pickens would be late for practice, catching his plane on match day, apart from his occasional hissy fits on the field.

They didn’t want to pay him $30-plus million dollars, and these antics are probably just going to get worse.

TJ Houshmandzadeh added

If Pickens has a decent enough season, then he would demand a big paycheck from the Cowboys, which the Steelers didn’t want to. They had seen enough of his antics on the field to let him walk. It saved them a lot of money, and in return, they got a couple more compensatory picks.
