Christian Veilleux’s debut game for the Georgia State Panthers did not go as per general expectations. The 23-year-old quarterback almost retired from the game after receiving a blow to his tenders.

During the fourth quarter with under eight minutes left on the clock against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, Veilleux decided to run the ball. He went for a quick handoff to his running back Sy’veon Wilkerson and blocked Georgia’s blitz.

However, Georgia Tech’s senior linebacker Trenilyas Tatum smashed into Veilleux. The impact left the former Penn State backup on the ground in agony as the Bobby Dodd Stadium went silent. Panthers’ medical team quickly rushed to check on their quarterback’s health because he got at his private parts.

Fortunately for the Panthers Veilleux managed to get back up on his feet and finish the game.

Christian Veilleux could not save Georgia State from an opening-day loss

The Yellow Jackets meant business from the starting whistle because they had pulled off an upset win over the Florida State Seminoles in week 0 in Ireland. They traveled to the Sun Belt Conference team’s house looking to keep their momentum going.

By the middle of the third quarter, Georgia Tech led the game 28-3. Quarterback Haynes King contributed with a 2-yard rushing touchdown and then a layoff to running back Jamal Haynes for a 1-yard touchdown. He found wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. for a 35-yard run and threw a 52-yard dime to Malik Rutherford.

The Panthers were only the game because of their kicker who tucked away a couple of field goals. Christian Veilleux was struggling but did throw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Fleming. However, the Yellow Jackets wrapped the game when King threw a 22-yard pass to Avery Boyd in the final quarter, winning the game 35-12 even after the Jackets were penalized 8 times for a loss of 72 yards on the ground.

Christian Veilleux finished the night with 19/36 completions for 210 yards, 1 touchdown, and a lot of groin pain. Georgia’s King threw for 24 /29, 275 yards 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Rutherford was the best catcher with 7 receptions for 131 yards and 1 touchdown.

Up next, the Panthers will welcome the Chattanooga Mocs who got destroyed 62-3 by the Tennessee Volunteers in the earlier kickoff. If Veilleux wants to record his first win for the Panthers then this will be his best chance to do it. The Jackest on the other hand will face ACC opponents, Syracuse in their third game.
