Germany to host a NFL game in 2022 for the first time in their history
The NFL on Wednesday announced that Germany will host a regular-season game for the time in country’s history at Bayern Munich’s home ground Allianz Arena. As many as five games will be played internationally with Germany one of the countries.
According to NFL, three games will be played in the United Kingdom with Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur to host one game, one game in Mexico and one in Germany at the Allianz Arena. The NFL had shortlisted three host cities in Germany- Munich, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf. However Munich was chosen to host the first ever NFL game, while Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park to host in 2023 and then the league will return to Munich in 2024 and then to Frankfurt in 2025.
“We are very pleased to welcome Munich and Frankfurt to the NFL family and are excited to reward our fans in Germany for their passion by bringing them the spectacle of regular-season NFL football” Goodell said in a statement ahead of Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles on Sunday.
“We look forward to staging our first game in Germany at Bayern Munich’s fantastic stadium later this year and to exploring areas of broader collaboration with the Bundesliga.” Goodell added.
NFL returns to Germany for the first time since preseason games between 1990 and 1994
Next season’s International Series will be the first time NFL is back in Germany since 1994. However NFL had a number of host cities for the overseas competition that is the World League of American Football, NFL Europe and NFL Europa between 1991 and 2007, though Munich was never a part of it.
NFL in December granted access to marketing, fan engagement and commercialization to 18 teams in eight different countries. And the league will make sure that the teams play in their designated markets. The Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were granted access to Germany.
