The journey of the New York Yankees in the 2024 postseason came to an end on Wednesday night following a brutal loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gerrit Cole would later get emotional in the press conference and claimed it was the “worst feeling” anyone can have.

After an impressive performance in Game 1, Cole took to the mound in Game 5 intending to force a Game 6. At first, it seemed his plans were working as he once again dominated from the mound.

However, the huge meltdown in the fifth inning turned out to be the turning point in the game. After a fielding error by Aaron Judge, Cole also made a mistake.

He would exit the game after throwing 108 pitches in 6.2 innings and receive a standing ovation from the crowd. The bullpen, though, were unable to back his effort and ended up conceding three runs.

This is like as bad as it gets. I mean, it’s the worst feeling that you can have, especially because, you know, you have to keep sometimes willing yourself to believe and to give yourself a chance.

With two outs and bases loaded, he came up against Mookie Betts. The Dodgers’ star would hit a routine groundball toward first base. While Anthony Rizzo collected the ball, both he and Cole failed to cover the first base in time.

This saw Betts open the scoring for the Dodgers. They would put up four more runs in that inning to tie up the game.

I took a bad angle to the ball. I wasn’t sure how hard he hit it. By the time the ball got by me, I was not in a position to cover first. Neither of us were.
