WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson swept out grinder Josh Padley via ninth-round TKO tonight. They met for the Beterbiev vs. Bivol 2 “The Last Crescendo” event in Riyadh, live on DAZN pay-per-view. However, boxing superstar Gervonta Davis is not finding his performance all that much of a head-turner.
Stevenson needed to take the cake on this. Because amid retirement jumpscares, promoter Eddie Hearn was vying for the “biggest fight in boxing” next against Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Josh Padley was hardly a top 10 level boxer that promoter Hearn handpicked from the pool. Stevenson needed a flashy dominant finish to make the case for a bigger matchup. He later weighed in on his performance.
I got to keep working and keep getting better at it, … In my downtime, I got to take care of it. I got to find the best of the best doctors in the world, and once I do, everything is going to be okay. Did you see me switch orthodox out there? ‘Boom!’…

Despite going from “Outlaw” to “Sugar” to “Fearless”, Stevenson often comes under fire for “boring” performances. Unlike icon Floyd Mayweather, who made defensive roll a sweet science, Stevenson lacks the speed and power to go with it. It might not prove his chances against Davis; however, this time, he went the stretch proactively. Tank, though, dumbed it down in a hard one-word reaction.

Before his corner threw in the towel, Padley had wobbled and fell flat three times by body shots in the ninth. The undefeated American boxer peeled off at him in the ninth without fear of anything powerful being thrown back at him.
Before this, the WBC lightweight defended against Artem Harutyunyan at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. Many fans had booed and left the arena. While a somewhat vast level of improvement, does it favor him for a matchup against Davis?
Gervonta Davis weighs in on a matchup vs. Shakur Stevenson
Shakur Stevenson is hardly a big PPV draw or easy on the eyes with clinical fighting. He’s mostly most defense and no offense. Meanwhile, Tank’s biggest straw in his 12-year career was his boxing bout vs. Ryan Garcia. It is something that Davis has wanted to get back to. The buzz can be credited to “KingRy” and his antics that made it a must-watch.

Hearn signing Shakur, who is now 23-0, 11 KO, to a two-fight contract is a big ask. Josh Padley was just about the stout yet fluff competition he needed before making a case for a fight against Gervonta Davis. Did he though? Tank pitches in:
No, no, no. I’m talking about after this year…For what? Like, who have Shakur. What…What have Shakur done? What. What have he done in a sport? He haven’t done nothing. The young one. The young one is looking more better than him. The. The Keyshawn [one]. Keyshawn. Looking way more better than this. I keep screaming this name. He haven’t done nothing. Even done nothing.

Davis mocked that former WBO lightweight title fame Keyshawn Davis would be a brighter option right now! To his credit, during “The Last Crescendo” pay-per-view, Padley pushed up courageously, even though the body-work kept hurting him. Tank reiterated that Stevenson’s latest and younger competition are performing better than him these days. That’s a serious no-no in his books.
