WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis defended his title against WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach in a highly anticipated main event at the Barclays Center in New York. However, contrary to everyone’s expectations, the fight ended in a draw. This result marked the first time in Davis’ career that he did not emerge victorious.

Given Gervonta Davis’ professional boxing record, the Baltimore native has consistently proven to be a dominating force in the ring. However, his fight against Lamont Roach turned out to be more competitive than many in the boxing community had anticipated. In the post-fight press conference, ‘Tank’ Davis was asked to share his thoughts on his next potential fight.

I think he was here. He came in my locker room. (Shakur Stevenson?) He wasn’t in my locker room. (Jake Paul?) Next question.

Even though Gervonta Davis didn’t explicitly mention Jake Paul, he indirectly hinted at what he would have done in response. As with any fight involving ‘Tank’ Davis, this match also captured significant attention from the boxing community. One of the main reasons for this interest was that onlookers observed Davis allegedly taking a knee for the first time.

Typically, a standing boxer receives extra points for a knockdown, but Roach did not receive any in this instance. As a result, the fight drew significant criticism, with several top boxers sharing their opinions. Notably, Terence Crawford was among those most vocal about the alleged poor officiating. Additionally, he is not the only boxer who has expressed dissatisfaction with the Davis vs. Roach fight.

Jake Paul’s immediate reaction to Gervonta Davis settling with a draw against Lamont Roach

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis entered the ring to face Lamont Roach with an impressive 30-fight win streak, characterized by numerous knockouts and dominant performances. In his most recent bouts, the WBA lightweight champion decisively defeated both Ryan Garcia and Frank Martin. Given that Roach competes in a lower weight class, many expected Davis to deliver another commanding show.

Like many others, YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul had certain expectations from the WBA lightweight champion. However, when Paul noticed a lack of enthusiasm in Davis’ performance against Lamont Roach, he was quite disappointed. In a video shared by All the Smoke Boxing on X, the ‘Problem Child’ expressed that the fight felt more like a sparring session.

He got lucky it’s a draw. He did a good fight, I thought he won it. But man, he’s got to create more action. That’s a sparring session as far as I’m concerned, but, god damn that’s not the Gervonta I know.

Interestingly, Paul and Davis do not have a good friendship with each other. Over the years, both boxers have frequently taken shots at one another. Most recently, the WBA lightweight champion seemed to criticize the ‘Problem Child’ for choosing to fight against retired boxers. It will be interesting to see who Davis fights next, especially after his underwhelming performance in his most recent match.
