Just a few weeks before the start of the new season, the New York Yankees have suffered a major blow. On Saturday, one of their power hitters, Giancarlo Stanton provided a grim update regarding his ‘severe’ elbow injuries and claimed he could be out for the season if surgery is needed.

Stanton was one of the top performers for the Yankees in the 2024 postseason. While batting with a .273 average, the 35-year-old drove in 16 runs and had 7 home runs for his team.

While the Yankees ended up losing in the World Series, they were expecting Stanton to keep his postseason alive and help them deliver in the 2025 season. However, they received some discouraging news when Stanton turned up with severe discomfort in both of his elbows during the start of Spring Training.

As per MLB insider Bryan Hoch, Stanton’s tendon injuries are considered ‘severe’ in both elbows. These injuries are linked with some ‘bat adjustments’ that he made last season.

Giancarlo Stanton said his elbow injuries are “considered severe in both elbows.” He attributes it to “bat adjustments” from last season and is unsure when he will be able to resume baseball activities. If surgery is needed, he said it would be season-ending.

Stanton also revealed that he was dealing with this problem for most of the last season. This included the playoffs as well when he was honored with the American League Championship Series MVP for his 4 home runs against the Cleveland Guardians.

The New York Yankees have received some major injury news in the past few days. After losing AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, the team learnt that ace pitcher Gerrit Cole is expected to undergo some tests regarding an elbow issue in the upcoming days. With Stanton breaking his silence on his injury and providing an update regarding his health, the fans are left concerned about the 2025 season.

Fans react to Giancarlo Stanton’s injury update

One of the major headlines for this season is how the Yankees would cope with the loss of Juan Soto. After missing out on the 4-time MLB All-Star, the team did make some moves and added some firepower in Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt. However, losing Giancarlo Stanton for the whole season could leave a massive hole in the offensive lineup of the Yankees.

Taking to their X accounts, fans expressed their displeasure on hearing this news. Some attacked GM Brian Cashman and the management for the lack of roster moves. Meanwhile, one fan wrote, “Wow the season is over already” while reacting to this development.

Stanton’s injury also leaves the designated hitter position open on the roster. While captain Aaron Judge could take this spot, manager Aaron Boone could turn to other options that include Ben Rice, Dom Smith, J.C. Escarra, and Everson Pereira.
