On Thursday, Giancarlo Stanton found himself in an awkward situation. During the New York Yankees’ 4-0 win against the Boston Red Sox in Game 3, the slugger had a “bonehead” moment. After the game, he would give a hilarious response to this as his side progressed to the next round.

After losing Game 1 by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday, the Yankees kept their season alive on Wednesday with a 4-3 win. This meant that the game on Thursday was a do-or-die for both the American League East teams.

In a tight game such as this, Stanton would lead off the inning in the 2nd inning. In this, he would connect on an 81 mph curveball of Connelly Early to deep left center field.

Stanton and the jam-packed crowd at Yankee Stadium thought the ball was gone and that it would be a home run. Before the ball even landed, the 5-time All-Star turned towards his teammates in the dugout and started hyping them up thinking it was a home run.

Despite being hit at a 114.5 mph speed, the ball only traveled 393 feet as it did not have the angle. It would bounce off the wall and fall back into the warning track.

After Stanton turned around, he realized what had happened. The 35-year-old would pick up his speed and hustle towards the second base for a double.

The Yankees were unable to drive in any runs in this inning. They did put up 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning and held on to their lead to win 4-0 and knock out their arch rivals from the 2025 playoffs.

After the game, Stanton was asked by YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits whether there was any doubt about the team finding a way to get the win. The Yankees slugger would then give a hilarious response and claim that the only doubt they had throughout the night was whether his shot was a home run or not.

The only doubt was if that was a homer or not whenever I hit it. Thank goodness for that bonehead play that the team was resilient enough and Cam (Schlittler) was resilient enough. And it didn’t mess up the chemistry or the moment. So that’s good. Kids at home, don’t do that. Future opponents, please do that. Bonehead play. Just glad it worked in our favor and it won’t happen again.

Giancarlo Stanton said as per YES Network

It was a big moment for Giancarlo Stanton in this series. Before Game 3, he was 0-for-8 in this series with two strikeouts. This double was his only hit of the game as he went 1-for-3. The Designated Hitter (DH) is currently batting with a .091 average in the playoffs, a concerning sign for the Yankees.

Last year, he was one of the top performers for the Yankees in the postseason. He had 7 home runs and 16 RBIs in 14 games while batting with a .273 average.

In 2022, a new playoff format was introduced. A third wild card team was added, expanding the playoff teams to 12. This saw the introduction of 2 best-of-three wild card series in both leagues.

Since its introduction, no team had won the series after losing the first game until Thursday. The Cleveland Guardians, the San Diego Padres, and the New York Yankees were all looking to make history by completing a comeback after losing the first game.

The Guardians and the Padres ultimately lost Game 3 against the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago Cubs, respectively, and were eliminated from the playoffs. The focus then shifted to the final game of the Wild Card Series this year.

The Yankees went on to shut out their rivals 4-0 and thus became the 1st team to complete a comeback in the best-of-three Wild Card Series.

Stanton and his team will now turn their attention towards a best-of-five series against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Canadian team had the number of the Yankees this year (8-5 record). Due to them holding the tiebreaker, the Blue Jays went on to win the AL East for the first team despite finishing with an identical 94-68 record.
