Greece’s men’s basketball team secured a crucial victory over Australia in group play at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning 77-71 on Friday (August 2). Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way with a game-high 20 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals, inspiring a strong reaction from his teammate and older brother Thanasis Antetokounmpo.
The win was a do-or-die game for Greece, and Giannis’ performance helped his country clinch third place in Group A. However, Greece’s point difference means they are not one of the two best third-placed teams, and they will have to wait for the outcome of other games to determine their fate.
Australia’s loss means they will finish second in Group A if Canada beats Spain, but will be out of the playoff picture if Spain wins. Greece led by as many as 19 points in the third quarter, but Australia came back into the game with a defensive-oriented lineup led by Matthew Dellavedova.
Besides Giannis Antetokounmpo, Thomas Walkup was another key player for Greece, scoring 18 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Dinos Mitoglou and Vasilis Toliopoulos also scored in double digits for Greece, while Jock Landale led Australia with 17 points and 8 rebounds.
