Despite using his body as a human wrecking ball, Cam Skattebo did not fumble even once during his first four games for the New York Giants. Everything changed in the fifth.

On second and seven at the start of the fourth quarter, quarterback Jaxson Dart handed the ball to Skattebo, who, as per his usual self, smashed right into the opposing defensive line—in this case, the New Orleans Saints.

Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee charged in from Skattebo’s right-hand side and punched the ball out of the rookie running back’s grasp to force his first-ever fumble. To make matters worse, Saints safety Jordan Howden scooped the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown.

Skattebo’s frustration got the better of him. Cameras caught him yelling in the Giants’ dugout for a new pair of gloves at one of the assistants.

Brian Daboll took the tough decision to replace veteran Russell Wilson with Dart after three straight losses. It paid dividends as the G-Men picked up their first win of the campaign by handing the Los Angeles Chargers their first loss of the season.

Skattebo contributed 79 yards, but he rushed nearly 25 times straight through players like Derwin James and Jamaree Caldwell. Daboll expected the same against the Saints.

The first-year rusher struggled against the Saints’ run defense and finished with just 15 carries for 59 yards (104 total yards) and one costly fumble. After the game, the Arizona graduate apologized to the Giants Nation with a tweet.

Sorry giants fans!!! I’ll be better for yal!!!! Love!!!

Black and Blue in New York

The winless Saints started as the favorites but fell behind around the nine-minute mark in the first quarter. Dart connected with tight end Theo Johnson for a 1-yard and a 15-yard touchdown to take an eleven-point lead.

Kellen Moore’s Saints were undefeated in their last three games against the NFC rivals and had not lost to them in New Orleans since 2021.

Spencer Rattler kick-started the recovery process five minutes before the halftime break. The second-year quarterback connected with Rashid Shaheed, who carried the ball 87 yards to bring the Saints within just one point of their opponents.

Dart’s 68.8% completion in the first half mattered little when Darius Slayton bobbled his pass. With barely a minute left in the second quarter, Slayton’s fumble was recovered by the Saints defense and returned for nearly 15 yards inside the Giants’ half.

It was Dart’s turn to cause a turnover. After the restart, Dart fumbled the ball on first and 10. Despite the line giving him ample time to throw a pass, Dart chose to run and dropped the ball.

The Saints capitalized through consecutive field goal completions from kicker Blake Grupe and went ahead of the Giants’ score for the first time on the night before Skattebo’s fumble return TD increased the lead to nine points. Grupe scored the extra point as the Saints secured their first win with a 14-26 scoreline.

Jaxson Dart finished with 26 completions for 202 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. After the game, he vowed to rectify the mistakes that he had committed during the game.

The Giants were third in conceding penalties before the Saints fixture. They added 8 more on Sunday.

It’s hard to win when you turn the ball over five times on five consecutive drives. We missed a couple of opportunities offensively, the flea flicker and some others. On defense, we did a good job in the run game. Gave up some huge plays for us. We can’t have those things; too many DPI penalties. You get five turnovers to zero; you’re not going to win in this league.

Brian Daboll said (H/T: Giants official transcript)

The Giants can still save their season, but it will prove to be a long 12-game year. Whether Daboll stays around for that long is a question in itself.
