Whenever Daniel Jones faces criticism, his teammate Darius Slayton has always stepped up in his defense. Just like he did this time when his quarterback became the target of the divisional rivals, the New York Jets following the joint practice together.
It started on Wednesday when the Jets’ Sauce Gardner was asked to say a few words about the Giants’ quarterback Jones. However, he responded with a laugh– leaving it open to interpretations, which many believe was meant to criticize Jones. As it reached the ears of Slayton, who was drafted alongside Jones and shared a close bond with him, he didn’t hold back from defending him.
I don't know what his intent was. I think I saw a tweet [in which] he said maybe he got distracted or something like that and that's why he paused. But whatever it was, regardless … it's easy to say negative things once there's a negative narrative around a person. But it doesn't always make it– well, in this case, it doesn't make it true. Nor does he see him on a day-in, day-out basis.Darius Slayton said referring to Gardner’s reaction at the presser, via New York Daily News
The Giants’ wideout argued that the Jets made Jones throw balls underneath because they were playing deep the entire game. Slayton believes the reason for such intense limelight over Jones is because of the number of primetime games and being America’s biggest media market.
Darius Slayton expresses confidence in Daniel Jones’ Abilities
Even though the Giants pulled many strings to keep Jones on the roster and give him a deserving deal, they reportedly considering trading up at the time of the NFL draft and adding a quarterback to the roster.
You just believe he's capable of that, because you see the big arm, basically that he's big, he's tall, he has a rocket of an arm. You assume his processing is good. You assume he's smart and all these things. You don't actually know, though.Darius Slayton said about quarterback Daniel Jones
Interestingly, Jones isn’t the only one whom Slayton considers faces unfair scrutiny. He also highlighted that the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott and Eagles’ Jalen Hurts endure similar fan outrage even on silly mistakes.
