The New York Giants shocked the NFL by selecting Malik Nabers as a wide receiver instead of a quarterback. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport even revealed that Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen inquired about the third overall pick from the New England Patriots, which was declined.

Only for the fourth time in NFL history, first since 2021, were the first three players off the board quarterbacks. The Chicago Bears selected Caleb Williams, the Washington Commanders picked Jayden Daniels, and the New England Patriots signed Carolina’s Drake Maye.

After missing out on Maye, the Giants turned their attention to the 6th overall pick. Everyone thought that Daboll would draft a quarterback because Daniel Jones is not 100% fit and Drew Lock doesn’t excite the New York fans that much.

Last year’s college football championship winner JJ McCarthy and runner-up Michael Penix Jr. were both waiting in the wings for a callup. McCarthy even expressed his desire to play for the Blue Half of the Big Apple.

However, Daboll and Schoen surprised everyone. With the 6th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected former LSU Tigers wide receiver Malik Nabers.

Interest in Maye perhaps hinted that Schoen was aiming for a quarterback. Yet they ended up taking a receiver. It’s not a bad move, because Daboll has previously said they are one of the slowest teams in the league after the departure of Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley.

The Giants needed some pace, and Nabers has plenty of it. However, this move has left fans scratching their heads. Check out some of the reactions:

With Nabers on the team, the Giants will be rapid on offense. They already have Isaiah Hodgins and Darius Slayton, who would love to have the 6-foot-199-pounder next to them.

Nabers helped Jayden Daniels achieve the best football player in college awards. Even though they never reached the playoffs, Daniels won the Heisman Trophy, while Nabers registered 120.7 receiving yards per game with 89 receptions for 1569 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2023.

Overall, Malik Nabers played three seasons for the LSU Tigers. He recorded 189 catches for 3003 yards and 21 touchdowns.
