Daniel Jones had his most trying season last year. Now heading into the next season, he does not have his former trailblazing running back to cover for any missteps from the offense.
Therefore, heading into the draft, many were expecting the New York Giants to draft a quarterback to eventually replace Jones. Instead, they picked receiver Malik Nabers. Good thing that, GM Joe Schoen is not ready to give up on his quarterback.
The GM was captured on ‘Hard Knocks’ talking about the current state of affairs of the team. There he explained his reasoning to keep Jones.
We're gonna draft well. We're gonna sign good guys. The reality is facts. Three serious injuries in two years. We need to protect ourselves. He didn’t have much of a chance this year. Your core guys that were gonna play together played less than 60 snaps together. You could have Pat Mahomes and he couldn’t f**king win behind that. I’m not giving up on him. He's on a contract for three more years.Joe Schoen said
Schoen believes Daniel Jones did not get a fair chance. Therefore, they will see how this year goes.
Some aspects which the general manager mentioned were not wrong. The New York Giants struggled with injuries last season. Daniel Jones himself did not play more than six games. A neck injury and the eventual ACL tear were the results as Schoen said, of bad protection from the offensive line.
Daniel Jones has to prove to the world in upcoming season
The New York Giants and Joe Schoen may have done him a solid by not drafting a quarterback. But even Daniel Jones knows the clock is ticking. This season, the Giants ended up having a good free agency. They signed a mix of young and veteran offensive linemen to ensure last season’s struggles do not repeat. Then they added pieces on the defensive side to ensure both sides of the ball are competent.
After all this work, they added one of the best wide receivers in the draft in Malik Nabers. Now Jones has a true No. 1 wide receiver and a much better offensive line. Therefore, the excuses will not be heard if he ends up having a disastrous season. As a matter of fact, he might be out of the door if he does not perform better than his 2022 numbers.
Joe Schoen might refuse to give up on his starting quarterback. But if things do not improve, he will look for replacements.
