Running a 40-yard dash is a true testament to acceleration and speed. The importance of it is such that many prospects move up or down the draft charts with their NFL Combine 40-yard dash numbers.

However, when most of the players clock in the 4-5 second range, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll had a high claim when it came to his chances. A teaser of Hard Knocks released by HBO, showed Brian Daboll sitting with the rest of the New York Giants front office as they watched prospects line up and take a shot at the 40-yard dash.

I guarantee you I could run a 7.0 40. If you put a plate full of wings on the other side, I’m doing that.

However, the rest of those present did not agree with this claim.

There’s no doubt in my mind I can run under a seven.
Brian Daboll doubled down

This was meant in a way suggesting that he will at the max be 3 seconds slower than most 20-year-old NFL prospects. High claim for someone approaching 50 and not in the best shape. NFL players are some of the most freakishly gifted athletes in sports. They have the rare combination of burst and power. No wonder all those present at the NFL Combine found it hilarious for Brian Daboll to claim that he can run it in under 7 seconds.

They unanimously agreed that it was not possible. Had he been as fit and athletic as cross-town rival head coach Robert Saleh, then it is possible. He did lose a lot of weight recently, but even then, 7 seconds is being hopeful at best.

Brian Daboll’s career depends on Daniel Jones’ play this season

7-second 40-yard dash claims aside, Brian Daboll is heading into the upcoming season with a different kind of hope. A hope that quarterback Daniel Jones plays to the best of his abilities. That is, throw for at least 3500 yards and avoid interceptions. Interceptions in his limited run last season threw away games.

But more importantly, doubts crept in within the organization if they had given him the massive contract too soon. They drafted a stud receiver in Malik Nabers to help Jones take his offensive output to a different level, as the hopes of the entire New York Giants depend on how the duo perform. They do not have Saquon Barkley as an insurance cover anymore.

Either they play well, or they succumb to the pressure and fail. If that were to happen, Brian Daboll will need to ensure his 40-yard dash times are good, as the Giants ownership and front office will be going for his head.
