New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen came in together from the Buffalo Bills after helping the latter piece together some impressive campaigns.
However, in the Big Apple, the pair could not execute the vision they probably sold owner John Mara. The Giants have so far registered a 20-40-1 record, with their latest being another questionable loss to the Chicago Bears.
This record indicates that the duo was not performing last season. But Mara decided to give them more chances and confirmed ahead of this season that the two would continue.
After their loss to the Bears, it seemed Daboll’s time could be up, as his questionable decisions when handling rookie QB Jaxson Dart were seen as a blatant attempt to keep his job.
The disregard for his quarterback’s health was probably the last nail in the coffin, as Mara announced via a statement that the team had dismissed Daboll. The statement also contained the following:
Joe Schoen remains in his position as general manager and will lead the search for a new head coach.
Giants’ statement read
The statement also highlighted what seemed to be praise of their GM for assembling a ‘young nucleus of talent’. It indicates that the ownership will be giving Joe Schoen some more time.
Fans lose their minds as Joe Schoen continues as GM
Football fans have all the receipts from GM Joe Schoen’s tenure. From his mishandling of Saquon Barkley‘s contract to how he gave away a monster contract to former QB Daniel Jones, despite his struggles.
Then to miss on draft day needs, among various other mistakes. He has brought in some good pieces in the form of Malik Nabers, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Abdul Carter, but fans believe those picks are not enough to justify keeping him on the job.
They feel that Schoen should also be fired if the franchise wants to start afresh and build a quality roster for the future. Some fans were furious, whereas others brought up probable reasons for him staying on the job. Check out examples of those reactions below:

Joe Schoen leading the head coach search? That’s like asking the guy who keeps burning the house down to pick the next fire alarm. Giants aren’t rebuilding they’re auditioning for a reality disaster show

Joe Schoen also needs to be fired because no head coaching candidate worth a damn is going to want to attach themselves to Schoen's track record.

Very curious to see what ownership does with Schoen.
Lmao half measure

Keeping the architect while sacking the builder never works. Schoen assembled this squad, picked the coach, chose the QB. Now he gets another swing? Giants ownership bottled the hard decision.

Joe Schoen has been worse at his job than Brian Daboll was at his. The Giants remain a total mess.

The Giants have put me in a position where I will now root for them to lose every single game because the only way Joe Schoen will be fired is if they are embarrassed on a national scale

John Mara might have kept Schoen so that the transition is not as severe as it would be had he fired him alongside Daboll. That could mean that the GM has time till the end of the season to keep his job.
Marcus Spears ‘perplexed’ by Joe Schoen not being dismissed after Brian Daboll’s exit
Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen were tied together at the hip when they came in from the Buffalo Bills. Most of the roster decisions were made in unison. That is why ESPN’s Marcus Spears could not understand what the New York Giants were trying to do.

The Joe Schoen thing is so perplexing to me… Now that he is choosing the head coach, he is going to make sure it’s a guy that he has the ear of… Sometimes, for me, that’s a gray area. They need a retooling in New York. They need a change in philosophy and mindset.

The former defensive tackle believes Schoen will be wary about his job security. Hence, his selection of the next head coach could be counterproductive. Instead, he would prefer if the Giants let him go and start from scratch.
