The New York Giants are done with Russell Wilson. Despite things picking up a good pace in Week 2 with the former Super Bowl winner, the Big Blue has decided to bench Wilson for their rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart.
The New York Giants are winless in three weeks. After three weeks, the franchise found itself with its first 0-3 start since 2021, a new low for the team. Although it was initially thought that Dart might be gradually introduced to the field, the mounting pressure might be a reason behind their decision not to take chances. The head coach Brian Daboll and Shane Bowen are on the final threads of a potential firing as fans are heavily criticizing the entire management.
The Giants envision a clear trajectory for Dart’s rise. After trading back into the first round to draft the Mississippi standout with the 25th overall pick, they’ve eased him in with a handful of snaps over the past two weeks. As of now, he has not yet attempted a pass in regular-season action. Despite the turbulence, head coach Brian Daboll expressed confidence in the rookie quarterback.
We put him in the game for the last two weeks. We wouldn’t put anybody in a game we don’t feel confident with.

Jaxson Dart is set to become the sixth quarterback to start a game for the New York Giants since 2022. He will join a list of predecessors that includes Russell Wilson, Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock, Tyrod Taylor, and Davis Webb, highlighting the team’s quarterback inconsistency. Russell Wilson will be the backup behind Dart while Jameis Winston will be the third-string option once again.
Jaxson Dart’s debut amid Giants’ struggles sparks debate
The New York Giants’ upcoming schedule is no joke. In the next six weeks, the Giants will face three of the six unbeaten teams heading into Week 4. Dart will debut against the Los Angeles Chargers, who are 3-0.

They will face the Philadelphia Eagles twice in Weeks 6 and 8 while they play the San Francisco 49ers in Week 9. The rest of the schedule in the next six weeks includes two teams with a losing record, the New Orleans Saints (Week 5) and the Denver Broncos (Week 7). The potential for Dart to start 2-4 at best.
The introduction of Dart amid the trying times feels like a glass cliff situation. Often heard in gender studies and corporate leadership, the glass cliff happens when women or minority leaders are promoted when a company is already struggling, making them more likely to be blamed if things go poorly.
Dart is in a situation where every play and every mistake is scrutinized. He’s likely to be blamed if he struggles, which could be seen as a failure of his ability. However, with Daniel Jones performing in MVP numbers and Saquon Barkley winning a championship last year, the management might not get away with blaming the players.
Nonetheless, Chad Johnson pointed it out in a recent episode of Nightcap. Johnson blamed the management for letting Dart deal with the mess. He said:
Do you really want to throw [Dart] out there right now and mess with his conscience? Throwing him out there to the wolves like that. You know what you can lose? Your goddamn confidence.

“They have their mind made up, they’re going to allow him to develop and to sit back. Rookies not thrown to the wolves, some are good at it.” pic.twitter.com/O7K6GJJR7p
Shannon Sharpe countered, saying that if Dart’s confidence crumbles after just one poor performance, he likely isn’t the team’s long-term quarterback. Johnson, however, disagreed, pointing out that the Giants are already struggling and swapping quarterbacks won’t solve their problems. In fact, he argued, it could do more harm than good and slow Dart’s growth.
