Last Wednesday, the New York Giants made some significant roster moves by adding safeties Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland. However, what caused a stir on social media was their decision to release veteran Jalen Mills just a month after moving him to injury reserve. 

A source close to ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that the Giants released the veteran defensive back before he could even get a chance to step on the football field in their uniform. The team had placed him on a non-football injury list after he arrived at the training camp with a calf injury on Day 1.

Head coach Brian Daboll previously assured that Mills is getting better and is “closer” to returning to the football field. But since the team released the veteran, he is “healthy now and is expected to draw interest,” claimed Schefter.

Having said that, the cornerback is not expected to remain a free agent for long. In his time playing in the league, he contributed to the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl LVII victory. Before joining the Giants this offseason, he started eight games for the New England Patriots last season after being traded from Philly in 2021.

Fans react to Giants releasing Jalen Mills

As much as the Giants wanted to avoid another negative limelight regarding releasing its players, they once again came under scrutiny over their roster strategy. The veteran player was anticipated to be a strong addition for a secondary after they lost Xavier McKinney to free agency. However, instead of taking advantage of his experience, the Giants decided to rely upon the youth to strengthen the defense.

Fans seem to be taking a hard guess on why the Giants decided to release him even though head coach Daboll assured he might return soon. They have been addressing the veteran as a “Patriot legend” and disappointed that he suffered an injury and couldn’t join the training camp. After losing a player like Saquon Barkley to a rival team, releasing Mills appears as a huge mistake by New York.
