One of the most controversial debates around the NBA is: who is the best? LeBron James, Michael Jordan, or the late Kobe Bryant. This debate has existed for years in and around the league and its fans all over the world. Regarding this, former NBA player Gilbert Arenas provided a unique take on the ‘killer mentality’ about these legends of the sport.

In an upcoming episode of his self-titled podcast, Arenas seems to advocate for James regarding the killer mentality debate. This was alongside former NBA stars like Nick Young and Brandon Jennings on Gil’s Arena Podcast. The crew seemed to pick their sides, with Jennings tilting towards James and Bryant while Arenas was more bent toward James.

“If you are calling me softie but I am busting your a**, it says more about you. If you’re saying this guy is a killer and this guy is soft, but this guy has way more kills in the faster time, you gotta describe it a little bit different.”

Throughout his career, LeBron James has been intensely scrutinized and has always been a divisive personality. Few players in history have had to deal with the types of criticism James has received. This ranges from comparisons to Jordan to arguments about his Finals record.

Also, according to Arenas, this criticism unfairly carries over into James’ later years. Mainly because his tenacity and ongoing brilliance ought to be praised rather than disparaged. In addition to the ‘killer mentality’ debate, Arenas has made it plain that the NBA community should not hold James to unrealistic expectations. Instead, recognize his achievements as a 40-year-old player.

Gilbert Arenas made a bold claim regarding ‘the best 40-year-old player’ in the NBA

A contentious discussion over the distinction between the NBA community’s perceptions of LeBron James at age 40 and Michael Jordan at the same point in his career was recently triggered by Gilbert Arenas. Arenas vehemently defended James. This was during his appearance on his show, Agent Zero, highlighting the hypocrisy of the demands made of the Los Angeles Lakers player.

“The best 40-year-old that played was LeBron, the second-best was Michael Jordan. They didn’t expect anything from MJ, they was just so happy to see a 40-year-old go out there and average 20. Why is they putting so much effort on trying to tear LeBron down for just playing at 40, like we’re pretending he’ 20.”

Gilbert Arenas emphasized the respect that was shown to Jordan’s performances while he was a member of the Washington Wizards. Jordan shot 44.5% from the field and only 29.1% from three-point range. This was while averaging 20.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game at the age of 40.

On the other hand, LeBron James is performing noticeably better at the same age. James is shooting 50.7% from the field and 38.6% from three-point range. He’s averaging 23.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.8 assists in this ongoing NBA season.
