Prosecutors arrested former NBA star Gilbert Arenas and seven other people for allegedly running a high-stakes illicit gambling ring out of a property in Encino, California. The former athlete showed up for arraignment in the United States after being arrested on Wednesday in the Los Angeles District Court that afternoon.
The indictment claims that Arenas hosted illegal poker games at his Encino estate from September 2021 until July 2022. Co-conspirator Arthur Kats staged the property, enlisted organizers, and collected rent on Arenas’ behalf under his supervision. Just as matters were escalating around the former NBA player, Arenas, out of nowhere, a day later made a stunning revelation on his X(formerly Twitter) account.
Arenas is known for his outspoken personality and did not sit quietly this time either, as one would expect. The former NBA player claimed that he had nothing to do with this, and also had a clear message via his social media platform.
Im Back on the Streets. This aint got shyt to do with me ‘ just rented the house’ Wasnt apart
Gilbert Arenas tweeted

That said, this matter is not a small one. It is something that can tarnish one’s career and all the hard work he or she has put into it. In Arenas’s case, it does sound concerning, despite the player making his tweet. As per the prosecutors, the said group hired young women to serve drinks, provide massages, and offer various other perks to players in exchange for tips and some portion of their earnings.
Additional staff included valets, armed security chefs who were hired to support the games during the gambling session. This is a very serious matter, which can also ruin Arenas’s image in the long run. For now, the star’s post sends a message that he is safe and has nothing to do with this matter, but it remains to be seen how this situation unfolds in the coming days or months.
Gilbert Arenas’ ex-wife posted a cryptic message after the former’s reported arrest
Gilbert Arenas’ arrest did not sit well with many, and surely must have affected his family members and people close and dear to him. In addition, his ex-wife also posted a cryptic message via her Instagram stories. It is not clear whether it was concerning Arenas, but by the timing of her post, it did seem that her cryptic message was hinted towards the former NBA player.
Arenas’ ex-wife, Laura Govan, is also the mother of his four children, Izela, Alijah, Hamiley, and Aloni. “Needed to clear my head,” she stated in an Instagram story that featured her painting.

The 43-year-old Arenas has also been charged with lying to federal investigators. Arenas’ moniker from his days with the Washington Wizards, “Agent Zero,” is referenced in the indictment. For now, as per Arenas’ recent tweets (as mentioned above), it seems as if the former NBA player has nothing to do with the recent allegations imposed on him.
Gilbert Arenas made an interesting take regarding the NBA teams’ cap situation
The general public now knows more about the NBA’s business side than ever before. They are aware that several teams have already been destroyed by the invention of the second apron. The most recent case of this has been the Boston Celtics as well as the Oklahoma City Thunder. For the Celtics, most of their players are on a heavy payroll.
But for the Thunder, who have built their team from scratch, they will surely face the second different situation in a few years when their players'(Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams) contract extensions get activated. Notably, Gilbert Arenas came up with a solution for this.
I should be able to build my team. If you’re going to penalize, penalize teams that didn’t draft their players.”
On the No Chill Podcast, Gilbert Arenas said
With his latest remarks, Arenas seems to side with the Thunder’s difficulties in a few years, because they were the only side to build their team from scratch, and the former NBA player understands how difficult it is. He is completely backing the Thunder’s development and blueprint to build teams from scratch, and wants the other teams that sign players outside their draft to be penalized instead.
