Despite a mid-season dip in shooting form, Caitlin Clark has been one of the better guards in the WNBA in the 2025 season.

The WNBA is no doubt a better place when Caitlin Clark is playing. Viewership numbers, ticket and merchandise sales, endorsement deals, everything is either setting a new record or near the most the league has seen in a long time.

Her opening night game against longtime rival Angel Reese might have been overshadowed by their scuffle. However, the game did manage to draw more fans than what their battles used to bring in last season.

It was a testament to the growing popularity of the sport, and how the Iowa native was fueling this growth. There was more proof when she sat out 5 games with a quad injury. Viewership numbers fell across the league by 50%.

It was as if the new wave of fans did not want to watch the other games when Clark sat on the sidelines. When she came back, she continued where she left off and delivered a scintillating performance. Despite all that, her peers ranked her 9th best among guards.

She, y’all eat. This is what you wanted. This is what you needed. We are not watching you for your talent. Someone came in that everybody wants to watch, kids and everybody. Now, we can see your talents. Just enjoy and go on with it.

Gilbert Arenas said on his show

This was former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, who said on his show that WNBA players should know what is bringing them the eyes and endorsements. If they continuously display obvious signs of jealousy and petty behavior, it is the players who will end up looking bad.

Pettiness towards Caitlin Clark started before she came to WNBA

Gilbert Arenas might have a point regarding other players looking bad for their pettiness towards Caitlin Clark, but it is doubtful anyone would pay heed. At least the events over the past 2 years have proven that.

Before the Indiana Fever selected her with the 1st overall pick in last year’s draft, there were already murmurs about supposed jealousy from current and former WNBA players. Rumor had it that they were disappointed that she was undeservingly getting all the fame.

Charles Barkley and LeBron James famously called them out for their pettiness. However, players responded by questioning the criticism as they had not said anything publicly. Soon, their defiance started to look pale.

Body checks, hits, and trash talk from opponents dominated every discourse in Clark’s rookie season. Even then, the Fever rookie decided to ease the situation by taking a stance against those trolling fans. It seemed everything became normal.

This season, 1st the Angel Reese scuffle, and subsequent calls for investigation into alleged racist chants from Fever fans, and now this player ranking. Even though one could say the 1st was circumstantial, the player ranking added further proof that Caitlin Clark’s peers do not like her.

Caitlin Clark’s former teammate joining Mercury

Caitlin Clark might shrug off these discourses as she looks to return from her groin injury and help her team continue to take that next step. Over the past couple of months, there was doubt that the team would need more time to gel than they had hoped for.

But DeWanna Bonner‘s exit seems to have helped the remaining players get along better. She wanted out after she understood that her game would not fit with this team. Now, as per ESPN’s sources, she is returning to the team that drafted her.

Bonner won 2 titles and built a legacy with the Phoenix Mercury. She is set to sign with them as she has cleared waivers. This move would reunite Bonner with her fiancée, Alyssa Thomas, who was traded from the Connecticut Sun this offseason.
