Gilbert Arenas provides key advice for Trae Young ahead of $300 Million contract

Trae Young, one of the most skilled young guards in the NBA, has consistently shown his ability to dominate games with his offensive versatility and unmatched passing chops. However, the Atlanta Hawks star has also garnered a reputation as one of the more polarizing players in the league, and former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas believes this unpopularity is costing Young millions of dollars.

On the Gil’s Arena podcast, Arenas analyzed Trae Young’s situation, attributing his inability to land lucrative endorsement deals and maximize his NBA contracts to the negative perception around his personality. Despite having a style of play that should make him highly marketable, Young has not capitalized on his full potential financially due to a perceived lack of likability among fans.

There’s just certain people that you don’t like… You just look at them and you’re just ‘I don’t like him.’ He needs a great PR that makes him look different in the world’s eyes. He just needs his own personal PR that can spin better narratives.

Gilbert Arenas said on the podcast

Trae Young’s unpopularity could also be affecting his All-NBA and All-Star selections, which are directly tied to the financial incentives in his contract. Missing out on these accolades has significant financial repercussions, including his eligibility for supermax extensions, which are worth upward of $300 million.

If you’re not voting for me for All-Star because you don’t like me personally, or you’re not voting me for All-NBA because you don’t like my money, that means I am not making my supermax. I’m not the $300 million player.

Gilbert Arenas stated

While Trae Young’s on-court abilities are undeniable, Gilbert Arenas argued that his personality, or at least how it is portrayed, has hindered his career so far.

Trae Young leads Hawks to victory over surging Cavaliers

Despite the chatter around his public image, Trae Young continues to let his game speak for itself. Over the past week, the Atlanta Hawks delivered back-to-back wins over the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team that entered the week with a league-leading 17-1 record.

Young, however, downplayed the significance of the victories, pointing instead to an earlier win against the Boston Celtics in an NBA Cup game as a bigger statement for the team.

This is obviously two big wins for us. The [Cavs] been playing really well and at the top of the league. I think a statement win for us was when we went to Boston without me, and we won on the road in the cup game.

Nevertheless, his leadership and stellar performance against Cleveland cannot be overlooked. Trae Young finished the game with 21 points and 11 assists on efficient 7-12 shooting, guiding the Hawks to a much-needed boost in the standings. With a 9-11 record, the Hawks currently sit in the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference.
